The Patrol Borough Brooklyn North held its third annual Operation Sleigh Ride, which has expanded in a few short years to a huge community event.

Officers from precincts across the northern Brooklyn area prepared bikes, sports equipment and toys to hand out to local children along a 10-stop route. The gifts come as donations from individuals, companies and organizations.

“It’s about us giving back,” Assistant Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said. “Reaching out to our communities and taking care of some of those who wouldn’t be able to take care of themselves this holiday season.”

“The first year, we did about 4,500 toys,” Maddrey added. “Last year, we did about 7,000 to 8,000. This year, we have a goal. We want to give out 10,000 gifts.”

The effort is part of an overall strategy of the NYPD to improve relations with communities and change negative perceptions about the police.
