Volunteers for the Red Cross responded to 600 emergencies in Brooklyn in 2018, making Brooklyn the busiest of all boroughs for crises.

For example, Red Cross volunteers responded to a tragic fire on Eastern Parkway in August that left one person dead and displaced 15 families, according to News12 Brooklyn.

The same month, volunteers responded to a fire on Coney Island Avenue that left four families without homes, News12 Brooklyn reported.

“To start to set them on that path of recovery to tell them this might be the worst day of your life, but it does get better,” Garrison Harward of the Red Cross told News12 Brooklyn.
