Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association raises money and toys for domestic violence victims

The Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association aims to do its part each year to help victims of domestic violence, especially around the holidays. With this goal in mind, the group continues its tradition of hosting a toy drive and fundraiser during its annual holiday party.
Nearly 150 members of the BWBA were in Brooklyn Heights last Wednesday for the party. All members were asked to bring an unwrapped toy to donate. Other donated items were raffled off.
“Every year during our holiday party we collect toys and hold these raffles, and all of the money raised goes to benefit the Safe Homes Project, a domestic violence shelter,” said BWBA President Carrie Anne Cavallo.
“We’re very fortunate to have a membership who comes out to support our party each year to make this possible,” Justice Genine Edwards added.
Items donated for the raffle included theatre tickets, sports memorabilia and jewelry gift cards. Brooklyn Eagle photographer donated a pair of prints, and Eagle sketch artist Alba Acevedo donated a sketch.
“We have to give a lot of thanks to our holiday party committee who worked really hard to put this event together,” Cavallo said. “Without their work this would have never have come together. They’re the ones who brought all of you here tonight to make this so special.”
