For several weeks, the Brooklyn Eagle has been hearing reports that the opening of the new Nitehawk Cinema in the old Pavilion Theater space in Park Slope was imminent. Now, it’s official: Nitehawk has announced that the grand opening will take place on Dec. 19.

While Nitehawk announced its $10 million renovation project for the former Pavilion in 2016, there have been several delays, according to Gothamist. The original target date was late 2017, but preserving the original theater’s architectural details took longer than expected.

For example, during the renovation, crews discovered the remains of an old balcony that may date back to the original opening of the theater, then known as the Sanders Theater, in 1928, Gothamist said.

The new theater will be known as the Nitehawk Prospect Park. The owners told Gothamist it will offer a “diverse mix of repertory and first-run programming, including more family friendly programming. The size of the venue will allow for quality Hollywood blockbuster first-run films as well as independent films.”
