Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire in Bushwick that left two small girls dead and put an older man in the hospital.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, police officers and firefighters responded to 165 Schaefer St. in Bushwick, where a second-floor apartment was ablaze.

Inside the engulfed apartment were 7-year-old Payton Gomez and 9-year-old Haley Harris, along with 53-year-old Vincente Gomez Jr. The three were taken to Wyckoff Hospital. After arrival, the two children were pronounced dead and Gomez Sr. was in stable condition.

Payton and Haley, two sisters, were visiting family at the time of the fire. They lived on Amboy Street in Brooksville.

The cause of the fire will be determined by the city’s Fire Marshall.

The city’s Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.
