“ROCKY” WAS RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1976. After premiering in New York City on Nov. 21, “Rocky” went into general release. Sylvester Stallone wrote the film and starred as Rocky Balboa, the hard-working Philadelphia boxer looking for his big chance. The low-budget and quickly shot film became a sleeper success and won three Oscars, including Best Picture.

JOSEPH CONRAD WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1857. The English novelist, born Jozef Korzeniowski to Polish parents, learned English as a sailor on British ships. He is best known as the author of “Lord Jim” and “Heart of Darkness.” Conrad died in 1924 in England.

“A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE” OPENED ON BROADWAY ON THIS DAY IN 1947.  Tennessee Williams’s drama opened on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre with Jessica Tandy (as Blanche Du Bois) and newcomer Marlon Brando (as Stanley Kowalski). Williams was already a Broadway star with his first play, “The Glass Menagerie,” and “Streetcar” was to be equally successful: it ran for two years and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Brando’s performance, using his Method style, was a sensation to audience members and critics. Tandy won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.

GILBERT CHARLES STUART WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1755. The American portrait painter’s most famous painting is that of George Washington. He also painted portraits of James Madison, James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson and other important Americans. Stuart was born in Rhode Island and died in 1828 in Boston.
