Man dies after losing consciousness in NYPD custody in Brooklyn
New York City police say a 23-year-old man died after losing consciousness as officers escorted him to an ambulance in handcuffs.
Tuesday’s death in Brooklyn is being investigated by a special NYPD unit that examines fatalities related to police action.
Police say the man was acting irrationally when officers arrived around 6 a.m. for an apparent family dispute, but that they handcuffed him without further incident.
Police say the officers removed the handcuffs once the man lost consciousness and ambulance personnel performed CPR.
The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name hasn’t been made public.
Police wouldn’t say why the man appeared agitated when officers arrived or if he had any injuries beforehand.
The city medical examiner’s office is tasked with determining the man’s cause of death.
