Bay Ridge BID’s F.A.C.E. of Fifth Weathers a Rainy Forecast, Draws Crowds of All Ages

Not a wash-out!

The Bay Ridge Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District’s F.A.C.E. (Family, Arts & Culinary Event) of Fifth Avenue Weekend Walk  broke out new attractions and old favorites on Friday, August 17, spanning from 73rd to 83rd Streets.

Carnival rides, clowns, kids games, food vendors and live bands sprawled along the strip, which was blessedly dry, albeit humid, after the stormy weather finally decided to take a break this summer.

“We were so thrilled it wasn’t raining,” laughed Amanda Zenteno, executive director of the Fifth Avenue BID., about the looming threat of bad weather. “Even though it was a little hot and humid, it was nice to still see a big crowd and lots of families. We really strived to have something everyone could enjoy.”

The Friday night festival this year was geared towards engaging and entertaining all ages of the community free of charge. In theme, the Bay Ridge Senior Center set up a jewelry making tent while Salon Briana offered free hair-styling and blowouts. Meanwhile, the event’s art walk featured 10 local artists with their work on display and restaurants such as Rocco’s, Skinflints, the Schnitzel Haus, Bean Post Pub and Mussels and More had both food and music set up outside.

Some new attractions included a radio microphone and recording table set up by local podcast Radio Free Bay Ridge with the goal of interviewing passer-bys about their favorite Bay Ridge memories, as well as a wireless headphone party — or, Silent Disco — that jammed into the night near Skinflints.

Hundreds of attendees also got to enjoy a karaoke competition, Brooklyn Canine Club-sponsored pet activities, contests and giveaways, as well as a shot at making a few hoops.

“We want Bay Ridge to interact and get to know our merchants,” continued Zenteno. “People are very proud of Bay Ridge.”

The rains, she added, held off until just the last minutes of the event as people were closing up.
