MTA is proposing an increase in fares once again and the upcoming two-part fare hike would constitute the sixth and seventh hikes since 2009. Details on the planned 2019 increase and a second 4 percent hike in 2021 won’t be known until public hearings are held this fall or winter, according to NBC New York.

The hikes are part of a plan to increase the fare every other year that also dates back to 2009. MTA officials said that even with the planned hikes, the metropolitan area’s combined transit system will suffer deficits for years to come thanks to declining ridership and the city having lower taxable real estate revenues than expected, according to NBC New York. The latest plan to increase fares comes a year after Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for the subways due to deteriorating physical conditions.
