The Rundown

~CITY COUNCIL VOTE MAKES IT FINAL: BOARDWALK IS LANDMARKED:It was only a formality, but a vote taken by the City Council on July 18 sealed the deal for the Coney Island Boardwalk to become an official landmarkOn Wednesday, the Council voted to affirm the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation of the Coney Island Boardwalk, officially called the Riegelmann Boardwalk, as a scenic landmark. The Council vote marked the final step in the designation process. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~CITY COUNCIL TOUGHENS LAWS ON AIRBNB RENTALS: The New York City Council cracked down on Airbnb on Wednesday, passing legislationunanimously that would require short term rental companies to provide the address of their rental units and other host information to the city. A coalition of housing and community advocacy organizations had pressed for the bill, saying companies like Airbnb have sucked affordable housing off the market. Councilmember Jumaane D. Williams said the legislation would “provide vital transparency in an industry that includes bad actors like Airbnb.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~PETER LUGER TO OPEN FIRST INTERNATIONAL LOCATION IN TOKYO: Peter Luger Steak House, one of the most famous and long-lived restaurants not only in Brooklyn but in the entire city, plans to open its first international location in Tokyo by 2020. The steakhouse near the foot of the WilliamsburgBridge attracts visitors from around the world, but as of now, it has only one other location in Great Neck, Long Island. Amy Rubenstein, CEO of Peter Luger, cited Tokyo’s demand for American beef as a factor in the company’s new expansion. (Food & Wine via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NEW YORK STATE LAUNCHES TAX PROBE OF TRUMP FOUNDATION: New York state tax officials have opened an investigation into the Trump Foundation to determine whether President Donald Trump or his charity violated state law. The probe began about a month ago and was confirmed on Thursday by a state official with knowledge of the investigation. If evidence of alleged crimes is found, the matter could be referred to prosecutors, who could seek the release of Trump’s tax returns. The White House says the lawsuit is politically motivated. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)

~PROSPECT HEIGHTS RESTAURANT TO HOST CELEBRITY CHEF EDUARDO JORDAN: Eduardo Jordan, the James Beard Award-winning chef of the Salare and JuneBaby restaurants in Seattle, has become a national celebrity in the culinary world. So it’s only natural that Olmsted, a restaurant inProspect Heights that New York calls “American Nouveau,” will host Jordan for a one-night collaborative dinner on July 30. Dishes from both of Jordan’s restaurants will be on the menu, which will be walk-in only. In May, the James Beard Foundation named Jordan “Best Chef: Northwest” and also named JuneBaby “Best New Restaurant.” (Grub Street via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE SEES UPSWING IN DOLLAR VOLUME: The Brooklyn commercial real estate market is on the upswing despite inventory being tight. For the first six months of 2018, the borough had 597 commercial transactions worth a total of $4 billion. This represents roughly a 44 percent increase in dollar volume compared to last year’s amount, according to a report by the Brooklyn commercial real estate firm TerraCRG. Still, the actual number of deals dropped by 14 percent, “largely because of the available inventory in Brooklyn,” The Real Deal reported. (The Real Deal via Brooklyn Eagle)

~R TRAIN REPAIRS PUSH BACK 4TH AVENUE REDESIGN: Bike lane repairs to Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park have been delayed to accommodate repairs to MTA’s R train tunnel below, pushing back the construction of surface bike lanes until next year or later. Only 10 blocks of the avenue – between 54th and 64th streets – will be built according to the redesign this year. The city Department of Transportation’s original plans called for protected bike lanes along Fourth Avenue between 65th and 38th streets to be built this year, with another segment between 38th Street and Atlantic Avenue coming in 2019. (Streetsblog via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Jose Miguel Medina hasn’t taken long to surpass his performance from a summer ago on Coney Island. The Cyclones’ hot-hitting right fielder showed off his improved power and production at the plateWednesday night, blasting the resurgent Baby Bums to an 11-5 rout of the Tri-City ValleyCats in front of 4,964 fans. Medina, who batted .262 with a homer and 20 RBIs with a .659 OPS in 63 games a year ago, is on pace to shatter those marks, if he remains with the Mets’ Class A short-season club for the duration of this 76-game campaign. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
