This Saturday, to celebrate the Waterfront Alliance’s annual City of Water Day, Brooklyn Bridge Beach – the shallow, sandy beach near the foot of the bridge – will open to the public.

The beach is usually closed to the public, although people still make their way onto it, usually to wade in the water. According to Curbed, there has been a push in recent years to open the beach, but the city has found several reasons not to do so, including its cost, the danger from waves and combined stormwater/sewage overflow nearby. On Saturday, however, the beach will host the sixth annual Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race at 8:30 a.m. along with free kayak lessons throughout the day. City of Water Day, now in its 11th year, is a free, family-oriented annual festival organized by the Waterfront Alliance, Curbed said.
