The last Papaya King restaurant in Brooklyn, on Flatbush Avenue Extension, has now closed. “We are currently concentrating on other channels of the frankfurter business [national distribution of its signature hot dogs and tropical drinks],” Papaya King owner Wayne Rosenbaum told Grub Street.

Not that long ago, outlets of Papaya King and similar chains, such as Gray’s Papaya, could be found throughout New York. They mainly offered hot dogs, fries and tropical juices such as papaya, pina colada and mango, although some have branched out to also offer other items such as hamburgers. Rosenbaum didn’t give a reason for the closure of the two-year-old Brooklyn outlet, but several food halls that offer a variety of low-cost snacks have opened in the area. Grub Street listed 12 surviving hot dog-and-papaya juice emporiums, all but one of them in Manhattan.
