~TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO SAVE SPEED CAMERAS: Facing a July 25deadline for New York state to dismantle speed cameras on streets near schools, transportation safety advocates are stepping up the pressure against lawmakers standing in the way of an effort to keep the cameras operating. State Sen. Marty Golden was the main target of a protest rally outside P.S. 215 in Gravesend on Thursday. Golden has repeatedly stated his support for the idea of keeping the cameras working but leaders of organizations such as Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets claimed that the lawmaker isn’t doing enough. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN DUMPSTER-DIVING SHOWS THE FACE OF FOOD WASTE:Janet Kalish has been the face of “freeganism” in New York for more than a decade. She digs into black garbage bags, taking out what she says is good food that never should have been thrown out. She and two others recently explored Downtown Brooklyn’s commercial garbage. Bare-handed, the group patted down the first bags to detect which ones contained food. Then they dived in. “Sometimes people dumpster dive just for survival … and just to save themselves money, but they don’t necessarily all have a plan about trying to stop all the waste,” Kalish said. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~LUXURY TENTS, GOURMET MEALS REDEFINE CAMPING ON GOVERNORS ISLAND: Just imagine it, a luxurious room on an island, with chef-prepared meals and a view of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. Hotel? Not exactly. It’s actually a campground of high-end tents on Governors Island. Rates that can run more than $700. “We’ve tried to create an experience where people can put all those concerns aside and connect to the place that they’re in, the people that they’re with and themselves,” saidPeter Mack, CEO and founder of Collective Retreats, which has developed similar camps across the country. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)

~SURFER-INSPIRED TIKI BAR OPENS IN WILLIAMSBURG: The Breakers, an ’80s-inspired bar complete with neon signs, surfboard and skateboard paraphernalia, and an indoor-outdoor bar, recently opened in Williamsburg. The indoor and outdoor areas are split equally so bartenders have a 360-degree view of the floor, which includes a skater-inspired mural. The bar specializes in tiki inspired draft cocktails and stocks 15 different drinks, including a zombie, rum punch, mojito, and dark and stormy for $10. The Sex on the Beach, however, is a staple at $5. (Eater via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NEW YORK LEMONADE STANDS NEED PERMITS, EVEN IF PROFITS ARE GOING TO CHARITIES: As the summer months and blistering temperatures hit New York, some brave kids are setting up lemonade stands around the city, but they’re technically supposed to have permits even if their profits are going to charities. According to Carolina Rodríguez, a spokeswoman from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, pop-up lemonade stands in the city are required to obtain a Temporary Food Service Establishment permit. Officials don’t usually make a fuss though, she told The New York Times. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)

~VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT IN BUSHWICK PUTS ITS OWN SPIN ON BRUNCH: A Vietnamese restaurant in Bushwick is reinventing brunch for Americans fed up with below average, overpriced meals. Falansai, a Vietnamese-French-Chinese restaurant, is located at 112 Harrison Place and is Michelin-rated. Chef Henry Trieu serves a crab quiche with shiitake mushrooms, glass noodles and crab. The eatery also serves three Vietnamese crepes: spinach and lemongrass tofu, mushrooms and beets, and escargot and basil. With a caramelized pork belly dish, Trieu spins his version of grits, hominy and sticky rice cooked to a smooth consistency in coconut milk.(Bushwick Daily via Brooklyn Eagle)

~STATE’S HIGH COURT TO HEAR CASE OF COLLEGE STUDENT MURDERED IN 2003: The murder case of John Giuca – involving a bar-hopping suburban college student who found himself at a Brooklyn house party where he was shot dead – will now be heard by The Court of Appeals. In 2005, Giuca was convicted by a Brooklyn jury of killing student Mark Fisher in 2003. Recently, a lower appeals court ruled that during the trial, the District Attorney’s Office had withheld the fact that one of the state’s key witnesses had been offered a deal in return for his testimony. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)
