A Brooklyn middle school principal has admitted what many parents and observers of the school system have suspected for years – that, at least in her school, students have been moved up a grade without the necessary marks or preparation.

Principal Indira Mota at I.S. 171 told parents that the school had promoted sixth-graders who hadn’t attained the necessary 75 percent in each subject without sending them to summer school, according to the New York Post.

The Department of Education explained that Mota was referring to students who could have benefited from summer school but were nonetheless qualified to move up. Periodically, there have been scandals in which schools have deliberately bumped up students’ scores on tests or promoted students who aren’t qualified to move up.
