THE LEDE: Happy Thursday, Brooklyn! The hotly contested 80 Flatbush project creates divides, Shaquille O’Neal surprises kids at Barclays Center, and we visit the Fulton Art Fair in Bed-Stuy. Plus, Rhode Island police officers help a Brooklyn boy, a historical relic surfaces at Prospect Park, and the ceiling collapses at the Borough Hall subway station. Finally, a Brownsville teacher takes students on the trip of a lifetime, an AIDS services center gets displaced, and we recommend bars with the best beer selection.

~HOTLY CONTESTED 80 FLATBUSH CLEAR IN DELINEATING BORDERS: Development that dwarfs any previous ones in Downtown Brooklyn is jousting for approval as an acceptable “wall” between Flatbush Avenue and the edge of historic Boerum Hill. And Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams’position on the controversial site is part of the issue. When Adams weighed in last week on the hotly contested, two-tower 80 Flatbush project, what drew most of the attention was his proposal to chop the height of the larger tower. Adams recommended cutting the project’s taller tower from the proposed 986 feet to 600 feet, a downsizing of 39 percent. (The Bridge via Brooklyn Eagle)

~VISIT BED-STUY’S FULTON ART FAIR, THEN TAKE THIS STROLL: Art and brownstones — an unbeatable combination. You will find both in Bed-Stuyvesant on June 23 and June 24. Visual artists are taking part in an important annual event in the north-central Brooklyn neighborhood, the Fulton Art Fair, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. As per tradition, they display their works by hanging them on the fence at Fulton Park. This will be the fair’s final weekend. It began on June 9. We recommend seeing the art show — and afterwards, take a stroll through the historic neighborhood(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~SHAQ SURPRISE YMCA KIDS AT BARCLAYS CENTER: Shaq attack! Youngsters from the YMCA were in for a shock as basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal and three college basketball stars — Marvin Bagley III, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Mikal Bridges, all expected to be top 10 pick selections in this week’s NBA draft — surprised the group by making an appearance at the Barclays Center’s practice court. Dozens of YMCA members cheered as O’Neal walked through the doors with the three draft picks, offering them advice on how to succeed not just in basketball, but in the classroom and life. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~SUBWAY SERVICE SUSPENDED AFTER PARTIAL CEILING COLLAPSE AT BOROUGH HALL: Service on the Manhattan bound platform of the 4/5 trains was suspended on Wednesday afternoon after a partial ceiling collapseoccurred on the platform. The incident resulted in one minor injury, and the cleanup and inspection took several hours. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~RHODE ISLAND POLICE HELP BROOKLYN BOY WITH NEW TOY: Police often get unusual requests, but one that Rhode Island State Police received ina letter was one of the most unusual. It came from Will Ketcher, 4, a Brooklyn boy whose toy cheetah fell out of his family’s car window on Interstate 95. In the letter, Will asked the police officers if they could search for his lost cheetah. A few months later, Will and his parents had a package delivered to them with a Rhode Island return address. Inside was a new stuffed cheetah and a note that said although the original toy was lost, state police had found another one. Will named his new cheetah “Rhody.” (WPRI via Brooklyn Eagle)

~FROM 19TH CENTURY CISTERN TO SEATING AREA IN PROSPECT PARK: Last year’s restoration and renovation of the 19th century Wellhouse in Prospect Park has turned up another relic of history. When workers restored the Wellhouse, which was once part of the water system that fed Prospect Park Lake, they uncovered sections of a curving brick wall that was once part of a massive cistern. The cistern, or tank for storing water, was originally considered an engineering marvel. Since April, the surviving part of the cistern wall was transformed into a seating area. (Brownstoner via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROWNSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER TAKES STUDENTS ON THE TRIP OF A LIFETIMEBijoun Eric Jordan, a Frederick Douglass Academy VII English teacher, has taught in city schools for 14 years, and he wants his pupils, mainly African-Americans and Hispanics from economically disadvantaged families, to travel the world because they may not have the funds to do so. Jordan raised $42,000 last year for his students to travel to Spain, where they visited Madrid and Barcelona. “I want my students to see that black people travel everywhere,” Jordan said. “It’s not just places likeBrownsville, Brooklyn, where we belong. We can hustle and get anywhere.”(Daily News via Brooklyn Eagle)

~AIDS SERVICES CENTER TO MAKE WAY FOR HIGH-RISES IN BOERUM HILL: HIV-AIDS patients in Boerum Hill are criticizing city officials for not going public about their plans to close and relocate a health services center that stands in the way of a controversial high-rise development. The HIV-AIDS Services Administration center at 94 Flatbush Ave. occupies a parcel owned by Alloy Development, which hopes to build its five-building 80 Flatbush complex on the site. “It’s deeply concerning for us, especially for an agency whose clients’ lives literally depend on accessing these services,” said Jason Walkerof HIV advocacy group Vocal New York. (Brooklyn Paper via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: In a little over two weeks, the Brooklyn Nets can officially announce that they have acquired Dwight Howard, an eight-time NBA All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year. That would have been groundbreaking news when the franchise first arrived here in 2012. But now it’s simply a trade designed to help general manager Sean Marks clear enough salary cap space to make the Nets major players during the free agency period ahead of the 2019-20 season. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
