A proposal to hike parking meter rates in New York City was introduced at a city Department of Transportation budget hearing recently. Transportation officials are calling the proposed rate increase a way to lessen congestion in the city by discouraging drivers from parking in one spot for hours, according to CBSNewYork. The plan involves raising the fees for heavily congested areas in the outer boroughs as well as Manhattan below 96th Street, as is the case now, while promoting parking in commercial areas. Many residents, however, say it won’t work. “It’s like cigarettes. People pay $15 a pack for cigarettes. If they’re used to bringing the car, they’re not subway people,” Randy Sokolovsky, of Park Slope, told CBS New York.
