The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that states could allow sports gambling, striking down a federal law that barred betting on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states. When big news happens, the Brooklyn Eagle reaches out to veteran assemblymember Joe Lentol, chairman of the very important Codes Committee, to read the pulse of our state. He chatted with Eagle Editor Gersh Kuntzman hours after the historic vote.

Gersh Kuntzman: So should New York State legalize sports betting?

Joe Lentol: I don’t see why not. Look, we have legitimized Bingo, horse racing, the lottery, and casino gambling. And now we’re going to start restricting other gambling? What’s wrong with sports betting anyway? We allow so many other forms of gambling, so we can’t reargue it at this point.

GK: Sports leagues will be upset, though. They always oppose this kind of thing.

JL: That’s not our problem. That’s their problem. Why should they be the only ones to get revenue? Legalizing sports gambling would make it legitimate. And we could regulate it just like we regulate casino gambling and horse racing.

GK: What do you mean, regulate?

JL: We could get our cut. There’s so much money being bet on sports as it is right now, but the state isn’t getting any cut.

GK: Do you like to gamble, Assemblyman?

JL: I like horse racing. Sometimes I go up to Saratoga in the summer. I like to play poker, too.

GK: Isn’t that illegal?

JL: It’s not illegal. It’s a friendly game. It’s only illegal if the house gets a cut.

GK: What’s your game at a casino?

JL: Blackjack. I don’t like craps. It’s too fast. I like to savor my money before I lose it.

This is the second in a series of chats with Joe Lentol (D-Greenpoint). Our prior story about legal pot is here.
