~THREE COPS NAB ONE WINE DRINKER IN FORT GREENE PARK: A gorgeous day in Fort Greene Park on Saturday turned into a crime scene as four people quietly sitting on a blanket, sipping an unidentified beverage out of red Solo cups, were stopped by police officers. Three cops surrounded the blanket — a standard-issue picnic variety — and demanded identification cards from the party. The liquid in the cups was confirmed to be wine — closer inspection revealed that it was white. Only one member of the group, an Australian man, received a ticket. The cops prepared to leave, but told the group they could finish drinking the wine. Go figure. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BAY RIDGITES RALLY FOR SAFER STREETS ONE WEEK AFTER CHILD WAS RUN DOWN ON 84TH STREET: Roughly 50 people rallied for safety improvements to poorly designed streets and the installation of more traffic-enforcement cameras in Bay Ridge on Sunday night, protesting at the 84th Street location where a child was gravely injured by a driver one week earlier. A bill to allow the city to double the number of traffic cameras from 140 to 280 is stalled in Albany, and residents and their organizers demanded action. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~RECONSTRUCTION BEGINS FOR DANGEROUS STRETCH OF ATLANTIC AVE. IN EAST NEW YORK: Workers have begun a $37-million redesign of a dangerous 23-block section of Atlantic Avenue in East New York in hopes of reducing injuries and crashes. Three people were killed — and more than 1,300 injured — from 2010 to March 2018 along the 1.2-mile stretch between Logan Street and Georgia Avenue, according to the city Department of Transportation. The project will expand roadway medians, extend curbs at intersections, install new left-turn bays and modify traffic signals to help limit speeding. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~EL CHAPO’S LAWYERS WANT TRIAL RELOCATED TO MANHATTAN: Lawyers for accused drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman want to have histrial relocated to Manhattan federal court instead of the federal court inDowntown Brooklyn. Guzman is being held in Manhattan Correctional Center, and attorneys have filed a motion saying that a potential jury pool could be tainted by the “spectacle” of seeing Guzman driven across town and the inconvenience of “the traffic disruptions created” by his frequent high-security transfers. (Daily News via Brooklyn Eagle)

~FAKE BOMB CLOSES OFF WINDSOR TERRACE FARMERS MARKET: Afake bomb caused a scare at a farmers market in Windsor Terrace on Sunday morning. A passer-by spotted a suspicious device on a planter outside Connecticut Muffin at Prospect Park West and 16th Street soon after 10 a.m.The witness called 911, prompting a response from NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit and Bomb Squad. The package, which was not a bomb, was encased in what appeared to be cardboard and wrapped in silver duct tape. A cooking thermometer and red wiring protruded from the top. (New York Post via Brooklyn Eagle)

~WEST AFRICAN FOOD COMES TO DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN: Senegalese restaurant Medina has come to Downtown Brooklyn. The eatery, located at51 Willoughby St. between Jay and Lawrence streets, combines its national cuisine with other popular dishes such as jerk chicken and fried fish. “Many classic Senegalese choices are not prominently advertised, but have to be asked for,” Eater reported. Among these are beef mafe, consisting of chunks of meat in a thick peanut sauce with carrots; and thiebou djenne, which features bluefish atop tomato-flavored rice and other vegetables such as cabbage, eggplant, carrots and manioc. (via Eater)
