A new program being piloted by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) will bring powerwashing to the commercial corridor of 86th Street from Avenue U to Bay 13th Street, this paper has learned exclusively.

According to Councilmember Mark Treyger – who has long advocated for cleaner streets in his district and specifically for additional resources for cleaning 86th Street – the program, called CleanNYC, will be cleaning sidewalks through powerwashing. The program’s intensive work, Treyger said, will take place at night due to safety reasons.

““I have said time and again that clean and hygienic commercial corridors are critical for both local residents and small business owners in our community,” the pol told this paper, lauding the coming program. “This is one of our busiest commercial corridors, and one that particularly stands to benefit from additional care and attention. Clean and safe commercial corridors are integral to maintaining high quality-of-life standards for residents as they conduct daily errands and transactions, and help ensure that our local small businesses continue to thrive.”

Treyger previously worked to grow the city’s funding for cleaning services like the City Council’s Clean Up NYC program and to bring together relevant agencies like the Departments of Transportation and Sanitation and ensure a multi-pronged, coherent approach to cleaner, and therefore safer, streets.
