~FULTON STREET BUSINESSES FIGHT OWN BID OVER CITY’S BUS-ONLY LANES: Dozens of business along Fulton Street in Fort Greene andClinton Hill are fighting their own business improvement district over a city plan to take away parking spaces and add bus-only lanes in front of their stores. The city says the bus lanes will speed up snarled service for the roughly 20,000 riders who take the B25 and B26 lines every day, and transit advocacy groups like Riders Alliance applaud the plan. Roughly 80 shopkeepers, however, petitioned Small Business Services Commissioner Gregg Bishopdemanding that the city stop the project, arguing that the lanes will mess up deliveries and drive away customers. They also claim that the local business improvement district and the Department of Transportation made the decision to add the lanes without reaching out to them. Fulton Area BID Executive Director Phillip Kellogg said, “Misinformation is being pedaled to the businesses.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN NRA SUPPORTERS FINALLY MEET IN DYKER HEIGHTS:About 100 members of Brooklyn’s Friends of the NRA were met by roughly a dozen anti-gun protesters as they gathered at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Dyker Heights — which allowed the controversial group to meet after two other venues had canceled on them. “Sieg heil!” yelled one group member as he entered the hall on 86th Street. Protester Doug Schneider couldn’t believe what he’d heard. “What did you say?” demanded Schneider, a candidate for Democratic District Leader. “What did you say to me?” But the man had already disappeared inside. Another attendee offered protestors both middle fingers before heading up the steps. None of the NRA supporters — all but three were men — gave their names to reporters, who had gathered after hearing that the group would be meeting. Two earlier attempts to meet — first at Gargiulo’s restaurant in Coney Island and then at the Grand Prospect Hall in Windsor Terrace — were scrubbed after the venues discovered that a pro-gun group would be meeting in decidedly Democratic Brooklyn. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~RUSSIAN DUMPLINGS SERVED UP OLD-STYLE IN SHEEPSHEAD BAY:It’s not exactly right on the bay but since last June, Luda’s Dumplings has been offering authentic Russian-style dumplings, or pelmeni, out of its table-free shop in Sheepshead Bay. The cooked-to-order pelmeni recipes come from owner Eugene Tulman’s mother Luda who used to whip up dumplings for neighbors’ parties when she first came to Brooklyn in 1996. Tulman pledged to follow his mother’s guidelines to always use fresh ingredients and mix everything by hand. Those practices are put to use in six fillings that include a Siberian-style beef and pork blend and a mash of potato and Cheddar filling. And for dessert, the spot offers farmer cheese pelmeni with cocoa-infused skins muddled with cherries and chocolate flakes. (via The New York Times)

~BROOKLYN-MADE SPACESUITS BEING TESTED FOR MESOSPHERIC TRAVEL: Brooklyn-made spacesuits are currently being tested to bring astronauts into the Earth’s most mysterious layer of the atmosphere to investigate the highest clouds in the world. The outfits featured as the first spacesuit developed outside a government contract, come from Brooklyn’s Final Frontier Design. “It is more mobile and lighter-weight than prior suits – 18 pounds total,” said Ted Southern, the company’s president. Brooklyn’s spacesuits also cost more than half the price of NASA’s at $125,000 down from the space agency’s $300,000 price tag. (via Inside Science)

~CENTRAL PARK BOATHOUSE REOPENS AFTER RENOVATIONS: The Central Park Boathouse has reopened with a shiny new look after closing for three months to renovate its 64-year-old structure. The $2.9 million renovation added seats, installed new furniture, finishes and lighting and fixed its water-damaged surfaces. “Aesthetically, it’s all going to be more appealing. It will feel like a porch overlooking the lake,” said owner Dean Poll, who worked at his family’s Sheepshead Bay restaurant when he was younger. The boathouse now boasts 185 seats and 30 new high-top seats with a full view of the lake. As for the menu, chef John Greeley prepares a seafood-heavy and expensive set of dishes. (via New York Post)
