~THE CONEY ISLAND BOARDWALK COULD BECOME A CONCRETE SIDEWALK: Even being named a city landmark won’t save the Coney IslandBoardwalk from becoming a sidewalk. That’s because the Landmarks Preservation Commission won’t have the power to stop the Parks Department from replacing the fabled city-owned walkway’s wood planks with cement slabs or plastic “timber” even if the structure is designated as a scenic landmark. The city Public Design Commission would retain authority over alterations — and fans of the wood boardwalk said the Landmarks agency should get tough and insist it has the right to protect the two miles of wood planks that remain on the 2.7-mile ocean-front attraction. “This is not a time for inter-agency courtesy,” Christabel Gough of the Society for the Architecture of the City said. “Everyone … wants it protected from regrettable, wrongful decisions by the Department of Parks. We want the boardwalk to be a boardwalk, not a cement road, not a plastic promenade, a real boardwalk made of real boards of wood, just as it always was, and should be.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY ACCEPTS DISGRACED STATUE: It’s not a monument to a 19th-century doctor who experimented on slaves — it’s a jumping off point for a discussion of history. That’s Green-Wood Cemetery’s explanation for why it has accepted a controversial statue of Dr. J. Marion Sims — the renowned, but tainted, man of medicine whose monument was removed from a Manhattan park and delivered to the celebrated Brooklyn boneyard on Tuesday. It’s the second tarnished artwork that the cemetery has accepted in recent years. The statue of Sims had been identified as a “symbol of hate” by a mayoral commission. The artwork will eventually mark the grave of Sims himself, who is buried at Green-Wood, once the cemetery constructs a suitable historical display to put Sims’s life and work “into context.” Richard Moylan, president of Green-Wood, said, “We [accepted the statue] with the intent to make sure that his whole story be told.” The Sims statue will eventually stand near another artwork with a history of controversy — “Civic Virtue” — by sculptor Frederick William MacMonnies, which was perceived as “a male stomping upon two women,” Green-Wood said. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~FORT GREENE’S MEDIAN SALE PRICE SURGES BY 131 PERCENT: Fort Greene saw its median sale price surge 131 percent year-over-year to just under $1.3 million while some Brooklyn neighborhoods followed suit and others dropped down, according to a Property Shark reportGreenpoint also saw a year-over-year increase of 81 percent, boasting a price above $1.3 million. But on the downside, DUMBOGowanusBoerum Hill and Brooklyn Heightstrended low with the largest drop in Brooklyn Heights at negative 35 percent. Fort Greene’s growth was attributed to new luxury developments with a property at 59 S. Elliot reigning as the area’s most expensive transaction at $3.2 million. (via PropertyShark)

~EL CHAPO TRIAL DRAWS 1,000 POTENTIAL JURORS WITH BROOKLYNITES IN THE POOL: Everybody’s in the pool! Brooklynites will be thrown into a pool of around 1,000 potential jurors needed to seat a jury to decide the fate of alleged Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmanwhen his trial begins in September in Brooklyn federal court. Judge Brian Cogan accepted — but was also awed by — the sheer size of the jury pool requested by both prosecutors and Guzman’s defense team for the trial. “I don’t know if that’s ever been done before, but we’ll do it,” Cogan said. In fact, large jury pools have been convened for prior federal trials, including those of cop killer Ronell Wilson, Bonanno crime boss Vincent Basciano and late Gambino boss John Gotti, according to the Daily News. The prospective jurors — all residents of the Eastern District of New York, which comprises Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and Staten Island — will be given a 20-page questionnaire to fill out on July 31. Eventually, 12 jurors and six alternates will be seated.(via Brooklyn Eagle)

STUDENTS GET DISPLAYED AT GUGGENHEIM:Established artists may be sitting in envy of some talented Brooklyn elementary school students who will have their artwork displayed in theGuggenheim Museum. P.S. 8 students in Brooklyn Heights and P.S. 9 students in Prospect Heights will have their work exhibited from April 27 to June 13 as part of the museum’s A Year with Children 2018 annual presentation. The students are part of the Guggenheim’s Learning Through Art program, which showcases art from second to sixth-graders from 11 city schools. EAGLE SPORTS: In his first two seasons, Kenny Atkinson has more than lived up to his reputation as one of the best player-development gurus in the NBA. Spencer DinwiddieCaris LeVertJoe HarrisRondae Hollis-Jefferson and rookie Jarrett Allen have all grown exponentially under the guidance of the tireless and determined Nets head coach. General managerSean Marks has proven that he can get Atkinson the players he needs to build a solid foundation in Brooklyn, despite having to wait until the summer of 2019 to control his own first-round draft pick. But at some point in the very near future, the Nets will have to stop pointing to how well they are building and developing and actually begin winning and seriously competing for an Eastern Conference playoff spot. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
