Bestselling, beloved author Sloane Crosley will present her brand new collection of essays filled with trademark hilarity, wit and charm at Greenlight Bookstore in Fort Greene on Monday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. In “Look Alive Out There,” whether it’s scaling active volcanoes, crashing shivas, playing herself on “Gossip Girl,” befriending swingers or staring down the barrel of the fertility gun, Crosley continues to rise to the occasion with unmatchable nerve and electric one-liners. And as her subjects become more serious, her essays deliver not just laughs but lasting emotional heft and insight. Ten years after the release of “I Was Told There’d Be Cake,” Crosley’s essays have managed to grow simultaneously more sophisticated and even funnier. Crosley will present her new book in conversation with Heidi Julavits, author of “The Folded Clock,” followed by a signing and Q&A.

Critics have hailed Crosley as the literary descendant of Nora Ephron, David Sedaris, Joseph Mitchell and Dorothy Parker, yet her distinct voice is tailor-made for contemporary snafus, large and small. Her new book is about finding one’s place in a world where things rarely wrap up the way we expect them to. It is your reminder never to fall asleep at the wheel. It is about feeling deeply while laughing your ass off. More than anything, Crosley makes us feel like we’re all in this together — which we would call a coup if it weren’t for the fact that this is the book we always hoped she would write. This is the writer who cracked open the predominantly male genre of the narrative humor essay and made way for fresh takes on contemporary life. And in these ludicrous times, her originality and sophistication are more than welcome.
