~CHECK OUT THIS HOMAGE TO OBAMA AND OTHER COLUMBIA STREET WATERFRONT DISTRICT SIGHTS: Does all the agita in America make you miss President Obama? If so, there’s a place in the Columbia Street Waterfront District that will soothe your soul just a little bit. Right by the shoreline along the popular Brooklyn Greenway bike and jogging path, a mural displays gigantic letters that spell out Barack Obama’s last name — and a giant red heart. The mural has been there for years. We don’t remember exactly how long, but we’re sure its existence predates Donald Trump’selection to the presidency. If you want to make a pilgrimage to this place where Obama — or his name, at least — still looms large, go south on the Greenway from Atlantic Avenue. This is the waterfront side of Columbia Street. The Greenway swings right along Degraw Street to follow the shoreline. Then a couple blocks further away, the scenic pathway moves onto Van Brunt Street. On the inland side of the street you’ll see his name on that building, standing like a silent beacon in the Trump Era. The building’s address is 62 Degraw St.Click here to see more beautiful sites in the neighborhood. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~STATE SENATOR GOLDEN FIRES AIDE FOR COMPARING PARKLAND STUDENT TO HITLER: State Senator Marty Golden fired one of his longtime aides when the man made a Facebook post that compared Stoneman Douglas High School student David Hogg to Adolf Hitler. After Golden was publically called on to fire his special assistant by candidates running against him, he announced his actions in a statement. “Anthony Testaverde is no longer employed by my office,” Golden said. “While freedom of speech is a right, that all citizens enjoy, what occurred in this instance was wrong and cannot be tolerated.” The post showed Hogg pumping his fist into the air with a picture of Hitler giving a “Heil Hitler” salute next to him. Below, it showed the student wearing a black mourning band on his arm next to a picture of a Nazi soldier adorning a swastika. (via New York Post)

~NYPD OFFICER ARRAIGNED AFTER ADMITTING TO LYING UNDER OATH FOR SEARCH WARRANT: A Brooklyn police officer was arraigned on perjury charges at Brooklyn Supreme Court on Tuesday for allegedly lying on five separate occasions to push forward a Red Hook gun possession case. Officer Joseph Moloney entered Brooklyn Supreme Court to face first-degree perjury, making a false statement and official misconduct charges. When a gun was found inside a man’s apartment at the Red Hook Houses without a search warrant, the 27-year-old officer allegedly created a story to get a warrant. The officer then held onto his lie up until the case was about to go to trial, when he admitted he was selling a false narrative. “Our police officers are expected to be truthful and honest at all times because people’s fates and the integrity of the justice system depend on that,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalezsaid. “We allege that the officer in this case failed to do that and instead repeatedly gave false testimony under oath.” Moloney faces up to four years in prison if convicted on the top charge. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MAKE YOUR OWN NEON SIGN IN GOWANUS: There’s already shuffleboard and axe throwing in Gowanus, but now Brooklynites can learn another peculiar trade. At Brooklyn Glass, students can take a one-time class to teach the art of blowing and melding neon artwork. The class, One Day of Neon, lets students work with bending glass tubes over an open flame to create their own neon piece. And in another two-day lesson, they can learn more complex techniques like splicing and attaching electrodes. “It’s all made by hand,” studio manager Kody Shafer said. “There’s no machines that can do this work. The methods really haven’t changed in the past 100 years.” For those that want to continue the craft, they can rent studio time to get in some practice. (via TimeOut New York)

EAGLE SPORTS: Pride still matters to the New York Islanders despite their recent elimination from playoff contention. Andrew Ladd scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation Tuesday night as the Islanders pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators in front of 15,284 fans at the Canadian Tire Center. Anders LeeAnthony Beauvillier and Brock Nelson also had goals for New York, which was mathematically knocked out of the postseason chase Monday night at Barclays Center against the Florida Panthers. “As athletes we want to win, we hate losing so we want to compete, we want to go out there and work hard do the right thing,” Beauvillier said. “It’s about pride, it’s about playing for us and it’s about feeling good about ourselves.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)
