For what turned out to be his final meeting as commanding officer of the 68th Precinct, Deputy Inspector Joseph Hayward — now heading up the 60th Precinct in Coney Island — honored the precinct’s auxiliary officers, unpaid volunteers who help out in a wide range of situations simply for the love of the community.

Among the initiatives that the 68th Precinct’s auxiliaries have been involved in, in recent months, was making sure the protracted spectacle of the Dyker lights went off smoothly, Hayward explained during the February meeting of the 68th Precinct Community Council, held at the station house, 333 65th Street, on Wednesday, February 21.

“They gave up their whole holiday season so residents could enjoy theirs,” stressed Hayward.

In the end, the 68th Precinct’s efforts in Dyker Heights during the holidays – thanks to both its officers and its auxiliaries — were well-rewarded. “There we no vehicular accidents, no pedestrian accidents and no crimes committed,” reported Hayward.
