If you walked into Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn on a recent school day and saw students sitting at their desks dressed in their pajamas, you might have been tempted to do a double take. But the children’s curious wardrobe choices weren’t made because they were running late in the morning and didn’t have time to get dressed.

Adelphi Academy encouraged the kids to come to school wearing their pajamas.

It was all part of Pajama Day, one of several events that Adelphi Academy celebrates to give students a feeling of camaraderie with their peers and with teachers.

Pajama Day provided plenty of smiles, according to school officials, who said students and their teachers roamed the halls in their coziest, comfiest pajamas, robes and slippers. Some children even brought their favorite stuffed animals to class!

Pajama Day takes place during Spirit Week, a five day program designed to promote school spirit. Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn is a private school located at 8515 Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge.

“Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s Spirit Week was a tremendous success and saw an extremely high level of participation. The students, faculty and staff truly enjoyed coming to school each day in a different themed outfit designed to showcase their creativity and promote camaraderie,” Head of School Iphigenia Romanos said in a statement.

In addition to Pajama Day, Spirit Week includes Brown & Gold Day, Disney Day and Mismatch Day.

Brown & Gold Day gives students a chance to show their pride by wearing the school’s colors. On Disney Day, kids and teachers came to school dressed as their favorite Disney characters like Mickey Mouse. There were also plenty of princesses and super heroes walking the halls that day.

On Mismatch Day, everyone came to school in mismatched outfits and hairstyles. There were plenty of laughs as students and teachers wore shorts over their pants, shoes of different colors and other examples of mixed up fashions.

Spirit Week has blossomed into a beloved week at Adelphi Academy, school officials said.

“From showing school pride on Brown & Gold Day to smiling at each other’s creativity on Mismatch Day, Spirit Week allowed students to bond with each other and their teachers while having fun learning throughout the week,” Romanos said.

This year, the school added a new event, Sports Appreciation Day. Kids came to class wearing jerseys and T-shirts of their favorite sports teams, including soccer, baseball, basketball, football and hockey teams.

There was also a Sports Bee in the school’s John Lockwood Theatre featuring students who squared off against each other in a sports trivia contest.
