Maimonides raises flag to fight heart disease

February is American Heart Month and Maimonides Medical Center marked the significance of the occasion by flying a special red flag on the flagpole outside the hospital.
The flag-raising ceremony, organized by the Maimonides Heart & Vascular Institute, took place on Feb. 23 outside the hospital at 4802 10th Ave.
The speakers at the program included Kenneth D. Gibbs, president and CEO of Maimonides Medical Center; Dr. Jacob Shani, chairman of Cardiology; Dr. Greg Ribakove, director of Cardiothoracic Surgery; and Dr. Robert Rhee, chief of Vascular Surgery.
Another speaker, Declan Doyle, senior vice president of Operations and Clinical Programs, discussed cardiovascular care at Maimonides Medical Center.
Members of the hospital’s staff wore red to show their support of efforts to promote heart health.
Patients who undergo heart valve operations at Maimonides Medical Center have significantly low mortality rates, according to a report from the New York State Department of Health.
