ENGLAND — Woman Wins Annual Pancake Race: Winner Katie Godof, right, with a time of 1 minute, 11.4 seconds, runs toward the finish line at the annual Shrove Tuesday Trans-Atlantic Pancake Race in Olney. Every year, women clad in aprons and head scarves from Olney and the city of Liberal, in Kansas, U.S., run their respective legs of the race with pancakes in their pans. According to legend, the Olney race started in 1445 when a harried housewife arrived at church on Shrove Tuesday still clutching her frying pan with a pancake in it. Liberal challenged Olney to a friendly international competition in 1950 after seeing photos of the race in a magazine.

RUSSIA — Remembering Plane Passengers: In this Monday photo, people gather at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and light 71 candles in memory of those killed in the An-148 plane crash. The Russian passenger plane crashed Sunday near Moscow, killing everyone aboard shortly after the jet took off from one of the city’s airports. The Saratov Airlines regional jet disappeared from radar screens a few minutes after departing from Domodedovo Airport en route to Orsk, a city some 1,000 miles southeast of Moscow.

NEPAL – Shivaratri Festival: A Hindu holy man smokes marijuana at the courtyard of the Pashupatinath temple on the eve of Shivaratri festival in Kathmandu, Nepal, Monday. Shivaratri, or the night of Shiva, is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, the Hindu god of death and destruction.
