THE LEDE: Happy Monday, Brooklyn! A Crown Heights hardware store needs some help, a Greenpoint bar has a “no a**holes” policy, and a staple on Atlantic Avenue is set to shutter. Plus, we interview Doug Steiner, cabbies clash with Uber drivers in London, and America added 200,000 jobs in January. Finally, President Trump meets with North Korean defectors at the White House, 38.4 percent of America is in a drought, and a 1,000-pound bomb from World War II is removed from a construction site in Hong Kong. Have a great week.

~NEIGHBORS CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THREATENED CROWN HEIGHTS HARDWARE STORE: Customers and neighbors are rallying to help a hardworking Crown Heights hardware store owner save his business.Mohammed Kamara, owner and operator of American Star Hardware Store on Saint Johns Place, arrived at his shop recently to find a “for sale” sign posted on the building. Unless he can gather the funds to buy the rights to the sales contract from the property’s executor, he faces eviction from the business he has owned and operated for 20 years. After taking the case to court, he was offered the sales contract to the building — but only if he pays the building’s taxation fines, which are about $23,400. The community has started a fundraiser for him on GoFundMe. As of Friday, $4,218 has been raised, and the Feb. 6 deadline is rapidly approaching. Kamara, originally from Liberia, is the father of six children. “All of my children grew up in the store,” he told us. “This has been a destiny for me. In God’s name I don’t want to lose this place. If any financial assistance is available from good Samaritans or philanthropists, I will be happy.” Neighbors joined the campaign after seeing so many small businesses get pushed out of the neighborhood, said filmmakerSuzi Sadler, who posted a video on GoFundMe. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NEW GREENPOINT BAR HAS ‘NO A**HOLES’ POLICY: A newGreenpoint bar at the northeast border of McCarren Park is now open with a line of women in charge and a frank policy, “no a**holes.” Bar Annickaopened at 544 Manhattan Ave. serving New American cuisine friendly to both vegans and omnivores. Its owners want the space to exude comfort and creativity to all. “We have a pretty strict no-a**holes policy, to put it bluntly,” co-chef, Emma Jane Gonzalez says. “We want this place to be a nice place to work and to come.” The bar is the first restaurant to open under the governor’s Farm Brewery license program that mandates beer be made primarily from locally grown products. As of now, the restaurant will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays until the spring. (via Eater New York)

~HOLLYWOOD EAST ON WALLABOUT BAY: EAGLE INTERVIEW WITH DOUG STEINER: Doug Steiner is not your average mogul. No bombast, macho swagger or Armani suits. Steiner is a wholly different paradigm: chill, low-key, unassuming and accessible. During a recent lunch interview at Peter Luger’s in Williamsburg, Steiner was dressed casually in sports shirt and stretchy black hiking pants. He listened thoughtfully to the questions posed and gave equally thoughtful, savvy responses. This is a builder who does the details. Steiner’s professional background is real estate development: He’s worked in the business for over three decades alongside his father David. Their companies include the Steiner Equities Group, Steiner NYC and the Steiner Studios, located at the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Studios are their most prominent development project: a 580,000 square foot, state-of-the-art film and television production facility. The studio employs thousands and is being expanded from its current 26 acres by another 24 acres. At our lunch at Luger’s, we asked Steiner about how he divides his time between all his various professional responsibilities. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~ATLANTIC AVE’S ANTIQUE HISTORY FADES WITH NEW CLOSURE: As more and more mortar and brick shops shutter in Brooklyn, a recent closure points to a sobering trend as antique stores along Atlantic Avenue edge closer to extinction. After 53 years, the owner of Horseman Antiques is selling the 18,000 square-foot building for $18 million. “Fifty-three years ago, Atlantic Avenue was a commercial avenue, extremely dangerous, but with cheap rents,” owner Donald Gianchetta said. “At one time there were 50 antique stores. But it’s gotten to be very trendy.” Gianchetta attributes the decline of antique stores to rising rents and shifting tastes, saying he now makes 80 percent of his sales online. Antique stores along the avenue have been slowly replaced by boutiques, bars and restaurants. (via Brownstoner)
