A half a dozen 62nd Precinct police officers were in the spotlight, earlier this month, for successfully apprehending a career criminal who is believed to have been behind a series of car break-ins in the Bensonhurst area.

The cops — Police Officers Phil Green and Pelly Casimir, and members of the precinct’s Conditions Team, Police Officers Jean Innocent, Basim Elsawaby, Danielle Valentine and Nicholas White — were congratulated on the arrest during the January meeting of the 62nd Precinct Community Council, held at the station house, 1925 Bath Avenue, on Tuesday, January 16.

Captain Anthony Longobardi, the precinct’s commanding officer, told the crowd that Green and Casimir “were on patrol [in the early morning hours of Thursday, December 14] when a man flagged them down at 18th Avenue and 86th Street,” to tell them “that he saw another man break into a car and remove items.” The witness described the suspect, and the two officers realized that “the description matched that of an individual wanted from previous car break-ins,” Longobardi continued.

At this point, the duo “transmitted the description over the radio to alert other units in the area,” and the Conditions Team joined in the hunt.

“Working together,” said Longobardi, “the officers established a perimeter of the suspect’s last-known location,” and tracked him down. The witness identified him, said Longobardi, “and, after a brief struggle while attempting to handcuff this criminal, the officers placed him into custody.”

The suspect had over 83 prior arrests, according to Longobardi, who praised the cops who effected the arrest for “quick thinking and great tactics.”
