THE LEDE: Happy hump day, Brooklyn! MTA will host four public forums on the L-train shutdown, Brooklyn has the second most UFO sightings in the city, and Gov. Cuomo tells the Trump administration to stay away from New York’s shores. Plus, Stephen Bannon is subpoenaed by Robert Mueller, one group wants to make New California the 51st state, and Switzerland makes it illegal to boil lobsters while they’re still alive. ~CUOMO TO TRUMP ADMIN: OIL DRILLING OFF NY COAST WOULD KILL ECONOMY, WILDLIFE: Oil slicks off Coney Island. Disruptions at the largest container port on the East Coast. Empty nets for New York’s fishing industry. With these scenarios in mind, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a formal request on Monday for New York to be exempted from the Trumpadministration’s proposal to expand offshore oil drilling to every coastal state. Cuomo said New York state’s coastal economy generates tens of billions of dollars in economic activity and provides hundreds of thousands of jobs, all of which would be threatened by toxic chemicals released during drilling and from oil spills. Cuomo’s letter to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke comes a week after Zinke said the Trump administration would allow the state of Florida to be exempted from the controversial plan. Now New York wants the same treatment. In his letter to Zinke issued on Monday, Cuomo said that an oil spill off New York’s Atlantic coast “would cripple the state’s ocean tourism economy and devastate coastal ecosystems, and toxic chemical releases associated with day-to-day drilling operations and pipeline leaks would negatively impact marine and other wildlife.” The plan also undermines New York’s efforts to shift to wind farms for energy. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN HAS SECOND MOST UFO SIGHTINGS AFTER MANHATTAN:Sorry, Brooklyn UFO enthusiasts, Manhattan’s got you beat for New York City’s most otherworldly sightings. Even with a reported 24 strange objects since 2016, according to data from the National UFO Reporting Center, Brooklyn lags behind Manhattan’s 27. Most reports are of unknown lights and in Brooklyn they range from a “very bright, round-shaped light in the sky” to a “fireball” of lights. Queens residents experienced 20 oddities with the Bronx and Staten Island down in the single digits. “Do I believe in UFOs? I absolutely believe … I believe what the data says,” said the center’s director, Peter Davenport. “Read the cases and you come to the realization that these objects we’ve been calling UFOs for 70 years are being seen across the country and around the world on a daily basis.” The group has collected more than 128,000 sightings worldwide since 1974, with 4,500 of them occurring in New York. (via New York Post)

~HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD: MTA, DOT TO HOST 4 PUBLIC FORUMS ON L-TRAIN SHUTDOWN: An estimated 225,000 people will have their lives dramatically altered come April 2019 when the L train is shut down for 15 months. Although MTA released its mitigation plan last month, several questions still remain. And commuters, residents and business owners will have an opportunity to provide their input and have their inquiries answered at a series of public forums hosted by MTA and DOT. The meetings will take place over the next four weeks at various locations along the L line. “We are pleased to see that the MTA is re-engaging with stakeholders, a major recommendation of community members and local [elected officials],” saidKate Slevin, vice president for advocacy and state programs at the Regional Plan Association. “We hope that it is not too late for the MTA to take other recommendations into account to alter the capital plans to ensure this project brings meaningful changes for riders by upgrading stations and track beyond what the agency currently has planned.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR PROSPECT PARK RAPE VICTIM: Fallout continued this week over a notorious Brooklyn rape case that was recently solved after more than two decades amid sharp criticism of the treatment of the victim by police and the media. On Monday, the New York City arm of the National Organization for Women (NOW) held a rally in Prospect Park, where the rape took place in 1994, and demanded better treatment of rape survivors. The NOW members were joined by rape survivors at the rally. The advocates called for NYPD to improve its investigative techniques and to increase the resources dedicated to sexual assault cases. “An apology isn’t enough,” NOW-NYC President Sonia Ossoriosaid. “This predator went on to terrorize five more women. The reality is we haven’t made enough progress. We see firsthand how survivors still face a hostile police force and court system. Outdated attitudes about victims continue to persist in our criminal justice system and the media today.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Having lost six of his previous seven starts, beleaguered Islanders goaltender Thomas Greiss was in desperate need of a confidence-boosting performance Monday night in Montreal. He finally got one by making a career-high 52 saves to backstop New York to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Canadiens in front of a sellout crowd of 21,302 fans at the Bell Centre. “As far as tonight goes, it was a great effort from him,” Islanders head coach Doug Weight said of Greiss, who had to face a whopping 43 shots over the final 42 minutes before team captain John Tavares stuffed his own rebound past Montreal goalie Carey Price at 1:51 of the extra session. “Those are the types of games and wins that can build his confidence,” Weight added. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
