~BROOKLYN POL WANTS TO BAN CHILD SEX DOLLS: The sexual harassment accusations leveled against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and a slew of prominent men in the political and media spheres are causing lawmakers to re-examine many other sex-related acts in the country. And now, a Brooklyn elected official is going after creeps who get a kinky kick out of using sex toys that resemble young children. U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan is pushing legislation to ban child sex dolls. The idea is to combat pedophiles who buy and sell the life-like silicone dolls, which are manufactured to look like children as young as 3 years old. “It’s a uniquely vile person who preys on children to fulfill horrific pedophilic urges,” Donovan said. “During my 20 years as a prosecutor, I put away animals who played out their disgusting fantasies on innocent children. What I saw and heard was enough to make anybody sick.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~WITH BILL BLOCKED, HEAVY WASTE PROCESSING IN POOR BROOKLYN STILL UNABATED: “Waste equity” legislation, designed to relieve the trash processing burden in north Brooklyn, south Bronx and southeast Queens, died on Monday after one of its many co-sponsors, Queens Councilmember Daneek Miller, unexpectedly blocked it before it could reach a City Council vote. These three low-income areas process 75 percent of NYC’s waste, with the most capacity located in north Brooklyn neighborhoods including East Williamsburg and Bushwick. The waste transfer stations bring non-stop truck traffic, pollution and accompanying health problems, including almost twice the asthma rate of surrounding communities. Reaction came swiftly from the coalition of environmental justice advocates, community activists, officials and others who had been negotiating evolving versions of the bill, Intro 495-C, over several years. These groups are now speculating as to why Miller, who backed the bill for years, suddenly changed his mind right before it would have finally come to fruition. Miller gave no explanation for his last-minute flip-flop. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT: ENHANCED LANDMARKS MAP GUIDES HISTORIC NYC: In the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s latest effort to make its workings more transparent, it has enhanced its interactive landmarks map that was first launched in spring of 2016. The newly enhanced Discover NYC Landmarks guide offers information on roughly 34,000 buildings in the city’s 141 historic districts. “The launch of the enhanced web map will not only allow for a greater appreciation and understanding of our city’s rich architectural and cultural heritage, but it also brings greater transparency, efficiency and public access to the agency,” LPC chairperson Meenakshi Srinivasan said. With various filters such as architectural styles, types of buildings and era, the map can dive into history with the swipe of a finger. (via Curbed New York)

~TORTA-BASED RESTAURANT COMES TO BUSHWICK: What started as an importation of Mexico City cuisine at Hecho en DUMBO has brought Danny Mena and Oscar Leon Bernal to Bushwick for their newest restaurant, La Loncheria. The eatery just opened, offering tortas as the base of the menu with five varieties of the sandwich. “Over the last decade, we’ve seen a huge transformation in terms of what’s available,” Mena said. “When we opened Hecho, we wanted to serve what we thought of as genuine contemporary Mexican food. Here, we’re going to be much more adventurous.” In addition to several types of tortas, La Loncheria serves tacos, grilled dishes and various appetizers alongside traditional cocktails. (via Grub Street)

EAGLE SPORTS: Recently acquired Nets center Jahlil Okafor isn’t quite ready for prime time, nor any time at the moment, after logging just 25 minutes on the court this season during the closing stages of his ill-fated run as a Philadelphia 76er. The 22-year-old, 6-foot-11 center tried to knock off the rust last Friday night in Toronto, logging a whopping 23 minutes during his Brooklyn debut and registering 10 points and four rebounds. Okafor, acquired from Philadelphia on Dec. 7, hadn’t stepped on an NBA court since Nov. 7, when he got three minutes of playing time against Utah for the 76ers. “I felt rusty, had some cobwebs on me,” Okafor admitted after nearly equaling his minutes output for the entire campaign in the 120-87 loss to the Raptors. “But just to be able to get out there — run up and down and play basketball — was great.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)
