~65 BROOKLYN PRIESTS NAMED IN CHILD ABUSE CASES: A report sent out by an attorney group on Thursday details abuse allegations against 65 priests at the Brooklyn Diocese, including eight priests who have never been publicly identified as abusers. The report comes out just days before a Dec. 21filing deadline to receive compensation provided by the diocese to abuse victims. The priests served in about 70 churches across Brooklyn and roughly 65 in Queens, and allegations date back decades, according to the report put out by Lawyers Helping Survivors of Child Sex Abuse. In June, the diocese launched the compensation program, known as the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program. While the legal group says the report was released to “shine a light on the credibly accused predators in Brooklyn and Queens,” a spokesperson for the Brooklyn Diocese says that it appears that lawyers are trying to get in on the action to take a cut of the IRPC settlements, and that some of the names on the list are innocent men. Allegations against a number of the priests on this list have not been confirmed. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~CHEAPER WHOLE FOODS COMING TO BROOKLYN: A cheaper Whole Foods is opening its first location on the East Coast next month, and it’s going to be in Fort Greene365 by Whole Foods Markets is the super-company’s lower-priced, smaller sister store. The 40,000-square-foot shop will open up blocks away from the Barclays Center on Jan. 31, 2018 at the luxury tower, 300 Ashland. In addition to cheaper options, the store will also offer a Juice Press juice bar, a Next Level Burger boîte and a café by Orwasher’s bakery. These smaller-scaled stores compete with mid-market companies by minimizing staff, mixing in non-organic options and operating in an industrial design. (via TimeOut)

~BROOKLYN LITERARY MAGAZINE THRIVES WITH LOCAL STAFF, DIVERSE CONTENT: American Chordata began as a passion project for its editors, founded in Spring 2015 on the belief that a literary magazine can celebrate sophisticated design and earnest expression on the same page. Five issues later, the magazine is now available on bookshelves from McNally Jackson in New York to Powell’s in Portland. “We tend to think of ourselves as a Brooklyn-based magazine,” said editor Alison Lewis, who lives in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. “Most of our editors live in Brooklyn, and our editorial meetings are often hosted in my apartment.” Lewis said she learned about the magazine from a colleague at a publishing house she worked for, and was immediately on board to help. Quynh Do, nonfiction editor at American Chordata, also works as an editor for nonfiction titles at her publishing job. “My list at work includes a lot of serious nonfiction titles, and almost everyone who I read comes to us through agents. At American Chordata, I get to read pieces from new and emerging voices.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~LITTLE-KNOWN SECRETS OF THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE: The Brooklyn Bridge’s 134 years of history have been successful in keeping a few secrets hidden inside its granite and limestone structure. Now, Untapped Cities has published a “Top 10 Secrets of The Brooklyn Bridge” list that goes inside the bridge’s past. The list includes details about a Cold War bomb shelter in the Manhattan side of the overpass that’s filled with extensive survival supplies. Cross over to the Brooklyn side, and there’s an area inside the foundations that was planned to be a shopping arcade. Whether it’s the curse of its creators or the rumor of the bridge’s stampede, the list contains little-known facts that span the edifice’s unique history. (via Untapped Cities)

~BUDWEISER CLYDESDALE TEAM MAKES VERY SPECIAL STOP IN BROOKLYN: Here in Brooklyn, respect for tradition — combined with narrow streets and hordes of entitled pedestrians — brought a group of Clydesdales along Prospect Park West earlier this month. The eight-horse wagon was driven by a pair of conductors and a Dalmatian named Barley. They came to a stop in front of Farrell’s, preparing to re-enact a scene from the earliest days of Repeal. Larry, one of the team’s primary handlers, moved deftly among the horses, carefully adjusting the metal bits in their mouths, wiping each with a damp cloth. “They love this attention,” Larry explained. Their black leather blinkers, crowns and straps glistened in the streetlights. “It takes about eight hours to get each one ready,” Larry said. This particular team is stabled in Merrimack, New Hampshire, and works all of Anheuser-Busch’s East Coast promotional events. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
