~EAST NEW YORK’S EMPIRE STATE DAIRY WINS LANDMARK DESIGNATION: Moooooo! The old Borden Dairy in East New York is Brooklyn’s newest landmarkOn Tuesday, the city Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to designate the century-old industrial complex at 2840 Atlantic Ave., which is also known as the Empire State Dairy Company Buildings, as a landmark. This is a rare honor for East New York, a neighborhood with numerous buildings that preservationists consider worthy of landmark designation but few actual landmarks. Landmarking is significant because it protects buildings from demolition — which is a potential threat in this recently rezoned neighborhood. “It’s really important to preserve these buildings,” LPC Chairwoman Meenakshi Srinivasan said before the vote. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN’S TALLEST XMAS TREE COMES WITH LIVE REINDEER, FREE BOOZE: The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree may be receiving all of the attention lately, but across the river in Downtown Brooklyn, there’s an equally impressive tree. Brooklyn’s largest Christmas tree, at a whopping 55 feet tall, is 20 feet shorter than its Midtown Manhattan neighbor, but the Norway Fir is only one foot less in width than Rockefeller’s Norway spruce. “Brooklyn is growing in every way — and that includes our incredible Christmas celebrations,” Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams told us. “From the creativity of Dyker Heights’ home displays to MetroTech’s tremendous tree, our holiday festivities bring the borough together and attract the attention of tourists from around the world.” Ahead of the 28th Annual Light Up the Holidays celebration, which takes place on Thursday from 4-6:30 p.m., here’s everything you need to know about Downtown Brooklyn’s enormous tree. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MANAFORT’S BROWNSTONE SLAPPED WITH STOP WORK ORDER:President Trump’s disgraced former campaign manager who’s dealing with a federal indictment could have some more legal trouble on the way. Paul Manafort’s Carroll Gardens brownstone was slapped with a Stop Work order from the NYC Department of Buildings, but construction hasn’t halted. A neighborhood blogger found the 377 Union St. building to have raked in multiple 311 complaints about after-hour work since October. A nearby resident said the workers “have been working at night. The Sheriff drove up and they shut lights off. Sheriff drove away, they resumed work.” The blog with the latest scoop first reported on the investment property in February, finding the neglected brownstone had taken out mortgages beyond its value. The home is now bundled up in the seizure portion of Manafort’s pesky indictment. (via PMFA)

~DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN’ APPLE STORE VISUALLY STUNNING AND ALREADY PACKED: Business was quite brisk Monday evening at Brooklyn’s latest Apple store, which cuts a dramatic triangular wedge into the sky at 123 Flatbush Ave. in Fort Greene, within the BAM Cultural District. The store opened on Saturday. The emporium’s visually stunning interior features huge triangular windows, potted ficus trees, wooden tables and displays filled with products. The store (dubbed Apple Downtown Brooklyn, though not officially in Downtown) has 160 employees. More than 40 of the “geniuses,” wearing bright red shirts, could be seen working the floor on Monday. Michael, an Apple employee who lives in Boerum Hill, talked up numerous activities offered at the store, including photo walks and classes. See photos of the new storehere(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~L TRAIN RIDERS DEMAND ANSWERS FROM MTA, DOT ON UPCOMING SHUTDOWN: It’s been roughly a year since L Train commuters last heard from MTA and DOT about the looming 15-month service shutdown, scheduled to commence in April 2019. On Tuesday, riders, officials and businesses gathered in Williamsburg to demand a report of current plans for a number of troubling issues, including transportation remediation, help for local businesses and any street use changes proposed by DOT. MTA met with stakeholders in November 2016 to get suggestions, but did not maintain the contact, local officials say. Now they want to meet on a monthly basis. “You can’t have a good relationship without communication,” Councilmember Stephen Levinsaid. “If we are going to get through this together, we need to begin frequent and meaningful dialogue.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Hours before they capped off a 5-4 shootout win in Florida on Monday night, the New York Islanders picked up an even bigger victory in their ongoing quest to build a new arena in Elmont, N.Y. The Brooklyn-based NHL franchise, which is eager to land the large parcel of land adjacent to the legendary Belmont Race Track on Long Island, found out earlierMonday that it was one of only two remaining bids being considered for the coveted spot. With the withdrawal of the Blumenthal Development bid, the Isles’ New York Arena Partners, LLC proposal, and the one presented earlier this year by the NYCFC soccer club are the only ones in the running. The good news off the ice was followed by an inspiring result on it as the Isles outlasted the Panthers in front of 11,210 fans at the BB&T Center, putting Florida away on super rookie Mathew Barzal’s first career shootout goal. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
