SPAIN — Secession Supporters are Jailed: Demonstrators block a highway during a worker’s union strike in Borrassa on Wednesday. The regional government was sacked by Madrid and many of its members were jailed in a rebellion probe after pushing ahead with secession from Spain.

INDIA — Air Quality Sparks Public Health Emergency: Cows stand by the side of a road as a truck drives with lights on through smog in Greater Noida on Wednesday. A thick gray haze enveloped India’s capital on as air pollution hit hazardous levels. The Indian Medical Association said New Delhi was in the midst of a “public health emergency” and appealed to the city government to halt sports and other outdoor activities in schools.

MEDITERRANEAN SEA – Migrants Rescued at Sea: Migrants from a sinking inflatable boat try to get on a Libyan coast guard boat during a rescue operation at sea, on Monday. Five migrants have died as a German nonprofit organization, Sea-Watch, and the Libyan coast guard tried to rescue them from their foundering boat in the Mediterranean, with each side blaming the other for botching the operation.
