~DE BLASIO ANNOUNCES CAR-FREE PROSPECT PARK IN PRE-ELECTION BROOKLYN BLITZ: Mayor Bill de Blasio kicked off his weeklong occupation of Brooklyn Borough Hall with the announcement that Prospect Park will soon be permanently car-free. This is just the first of many Brooklyn-centric happenings expected during this week’s “City Hall in Your Borough,” where the mayor, along with city commissioners and members of their staff, move their operations to Borough Hall. The decision to make the entire parkcar-free comes after an eight-week trial this past summer proved popular with parkgoers, who outnumber cars more than three to one during morning hours. The announcement received praise from transportation organizations, including Transportation Alternatives, Streetsblog and local officials, who have advocated for a car-free park for years. Other events in the borough this week include town hall meetings, resource fairs and school visits. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~FIRST LOOK AT LICH REDEVELOPMENT: After heated backlash from community members followed by a quiet period, the redevelopment of Long Island College Hospital is coming together under the new name River Park. The landmarked Polhemus building in Cobble Hill is in the process of being converted into condos while the Polhemus Townhouses next door are on the rise. The next phase on the horizon by developer Fortis Property Group is the rise of three towers. The tallest of the three at 339 Hicks St. will rise to 440 feet with studio and one-to-four-bedroom apartments. The towers are being designed by three different architects. “What we don’t want this River Park project to feel like is a single, cohesive design that’s just a large mass plopped down,” said Fortis CEO Jonathan LandauNew renderings were recently released, and condo sales will launch next year. (via Curbed New York)

~SCHOOL DISTRICT 20 EXPANDS UNIVERSAL PRE-K TO MORE SITES:Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Universal Pre-K for All program is growing by leaps and bounds in Southwest Brooklyn, according to School District 20 officials, who opened a new site last week and are making plans to move into another location. On Oct. 16, District 20 Superintendent Karina Costantino and Early Childhood Director Dianne Gounardes cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the district’s newest pre-K site at 1423 62nd St., which is designed to accommodate 360 students. The district, which covers schools in Bay Ridgeand Dyker Heights and includes schools in parts of BensonhurstBorough Park and Sunset Park, is making plans to open another pre-K site at 363 93rd St. in September 2018. Registration for the 252 seats that will be available at that site will begin this winter. Children born in 2014 are eligible for enrollment. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN RETAILERS STAY STRONG: It’s a tough time to be a retailer with customers going online to shop more and more, but in Brooklyn, the retail game is strong. An analysis by the Real Estate Board of New York shows that foot traffic is increasing in many parts of the borough from hotels, offices and residential development, which is helping some retailers. “In spite of shifting national retail market conditions, Brooklyn continues to present attractive storefront opportunities in growing, more densely populated neighborhoods,” said John Banks of REBNY. The popular Barclays Center brings average rents up in areas like Park Slope and Prospect Heights from the significant foot traffic from concerts and sporting events. Smaller retailers in those areas, however, are concerned over rising rents. While average rents in those neighborhoods were slightly over $100 per square foot, Williamsburg has remained the priciest area in Brooklyn at $325 per square foot. (via DNAinfo)

EAGLE SPORTS: In true Cardiac Cosmos fashion, it took the full 90 minutes for New York to mount its comeback against Jacksonville Armada FC, rallying from 3-1 down to earn a vital point. “The team showed character in the second half,” said Cosmos head coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese after his team’s 4-4 draw on Sunday at a sold-out Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. “The guys came convinced that we were going to get back into the game.” With the tie, the Cosmos maintained a two-point cushion on Jacksonville for the final playoff spot with one game left to play.  (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
