A routine traffic stop turned into a gun possession collar last month for one 68th Precinct cop who was in the spotlight at the October 18 meeting of the precinct’s community council for the arrest.

Police Officer Hassan Gheith, a veteran officer who has been at the 68th Precinct since 2006, snagged Cop of the Month honors for the September 27 arrest.

Captain Joseph Hayward, the precinct’s commanding officer, told the group gathered at the station house, 333 65th Street, that Gheith pulled the car over at about 8 p.m. because of “illegal tints” on the vehicle’s windows. In addition, Gheith determined that the driver did not have “valid driving insurance.

“With these minor infractions,” Hayward continued, “the operator was arrested and was found to be in possession of a loaded semi-automatic firearm.”

Gheith, who began his career at the 67th Precinct in East Flatbush, has made over 240 arrests, according to Hayward. In addition, Hayward said, Gheith has “worked diligently” with school safety officers at Fort Hamilton High School, and has “helped to mentor adolescents that were having difficulties adjusting to high school.”

Over the past two years, he’s been a member of the precinct’s anti-crime team, working undercover and patrolling at night, “Apprehending the worst of the worst. He repeatedly arrests drug dealers, violent offenders and those carrying weapons.”
