~OUR LADY OF LORETO IS A PILE OF RUBBLE: It’s too late to save her. It’s not too late to mourn her. There will be a mock funeral on Saturday for Loreto — Our Lady of Loreto. In the blink of an eye, a demolition crew has obliterated the historic Catholic church at 126 Sackman St. in the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville. There’s nothing left but rubble. We snapped photosof Our Lady of Loreto today with a monopod — which is like a selfie stick, but sturdier — to get clear views of the demolition site over a protective fence that shields it from public view. All that remains of the stunning century-old church that stood on the site are its front steps and a bit of its foundation. The Brownsville Cultural Coalition held a memorial service on Saturday afternoon for the church. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~CHECK OUT BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK’S PLANNED PIER 2 UPLANDS: In fall of 2018, construction will begin on the 3.2 acre Pier 2 uplands in Brooklyn Bridge Park — the current site of the popular Pop-Up Pool. Theparkland that will replace the pool will feature a bowl-shaped grassy swath, a water play area and meandering paths. For those curious about the new section, Eric Landau, president of Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, will present its proposed design and answer questions at CB2’s Parks and Recreation subcommittee meeting on Monday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, First Floor Dining Room, 121 DeKalb Ave. at St. Felix Street in Fort Greene(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN FEDERAL JUDGE MIGHT REPAIR DACA: With PresidentTrump continually announcing immigration demands and the federal government refusing to push back a pivotal DACA renewal deadline, a Brooklyn Federal judge is ticking closer to fixing the problem himself. Judge Nicholas Garaufis said he might have to use his judicial power to repair the program that protects young immigrants if Congress drops the ball. Two DACA-supportive lawsuits brought to his courtroom have caused Garaufis to make some politically-charged remarks about the president’s decision. He’s called it “cruel,” “heartless” and said, “I’m just glad I was born in Paterson, N.J., not Mexico City.” (via NYT)

~USED LAPTOP DEALER LOST $10K FROM ALLEGED GREENPOINT MAIL THIEF: A Greenpoint used-computer dealer claimed he lost roughly $10,000after a postal worker, who was recently arraigned on mail theft charges in Brooklyn’s federal court, allegedly stole multiple laptops intended for his business. During back-to-school time, Nick Bratskeir came up short on multiple parents and students looking forward to new school computers. He alleges that Greenpoint postal worker Bagner Cardoso, who is charged with mail theft, robbed his packages. “He hurt me at a time that was busy,” Bratskeir told us. “It really hurt my business.” Cardoso was arraigned in Brooklyn’s federal court last week after he allegedly admitted to stealing about 10 computers in August and $9,870 worth of “[Forever] Pets” stamp booklets from the 66 Meserole Ave. Greenpoint Post Office. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~GREENWOOD CEMETERY HONORS THRILL-SEEKING PHOTOGRAPHER:A 25-year-old photographer whose hobby brought him to the edges of skyscrapers and bridges met his untimely death trying to get a unique shot of the city skyline. Now Greenwood Cemetery is honoring his work with a galleryChristopher Serrano’s photo of the Brooklyn Bridge is hanging in the cemetery’s columbarium and soon more of his photos will keep it company. He also rests in the ceremony inside a camera-shaped urn replicating his Canon 6D. “This is something that we wanted to do to keep his name alive and his work alive,” Serrano’s father said. Serrano died trying to catch a shot of the skyline from the top of a Coney Island-bound F train passing the Fourth Ave./Ninth St. station. His work also lives on in his Instagram, “Heavy Minds,” and through art galleries hosted by his family made up of photos on his computer. (via NYDN)
