~HALLOWEEN COMES EARLY THIS YEAR: It’s not often that Friday the 13th falls in October. In fact, the last time that date occurred was in 2006, and it won’t happen again until 2023. Friday the 13th has gained significance following the success of the American horror franchise consisting of 12 slasher films by the same name. And while Halloween may not be for another three weeks, Brooklynites seeking thrills and chills can celebrate the eerie day at the second-annual Brooklyn Horror Festival. The event will showcase more than 50 gruesome flicks over the course of this weekend. Rather than having countless gruesome murder scenes, the programmers have selected an intelligent and eclectic mix of movies that will challenge the audience and elicit discussion. “We’re going for a certain level of quality that you would find at the bigger festivals all around the world,” said Barone. “What we want to do is push the notion of what horror is to a degree.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~SOUTHERN BROOKLYN ISN’T SOUTH BROOKLYN: It’s not likely someone would differentiate between South Brooklyn and southern Brooklyn, but some old-timers native to the borough might. While many consider the shore-hugging neighborhoods to be South Brooklyn, the original namesake referred to the area around GowanusThe name comes from the Italian district that was the southern part of the original City of Brooklyn, long before it was a borough of New York City. When Brooklyn absorbed the Towns of Flatbush, New Utrecht and Gravesend in the 19th century, its geography changed to reach the Atlantic Ocean. Just like that, South Brooklyn became geographically inaccurate. “Today, South Brooklyn and southern Brooklyn are the same, the communities along the South Shore along the Atlantic Ocean,” said Brooklyn historian Ron Schweiger. But amateur historian Brian Merlis thinks South Brooklyn should be preserved for the oldies. (via NYT)

~HOW CAN BROOKLYN RESIDENTS HELP PUERTO RICO AFTER MARIA?:The city’s efforts to provide emergency aid to Puerto Rico have shifted intohigh gear, with the mayor and officials calling on residents to drop off donations at locations including firehouses and EMS stations, NYPD precincts, transit agency and police service areas. The city asks that people donate only batteries, diapers, feminine hygiene products, first aid supplies and baby food. Relief efforts are also being led by Brooklyn officials including CouncilmembersCarlos Menchaca and Mathieu Eugene, among others. Menchaca said that neighbors are banding together in areas like Sunset Park and Bushwick to make donations. “At a moment when our federal government is failing the people of Puerto Rico, I’m proud our city is setting an example of how New Yorkers offer real care and support for those in need,” Menchaca said. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~WOODY ALLEN’S WONDER WHEEL TRAILER OUT NOW: Brooklynites can easily picture Coney Island’s Wonder Wheel in their minds but Woody Allengives them the chance to see the 1950’s versions of the boardwalk’s rides. The recently released trailer of “Wonder Wheel” follows four characters that get caught up in mobster life as well as the dramas of their own personal lives in southern Brooklyn. Kate Winslet plays an actress-turned waitress in a clam house, a role she considered one of her most challenging. “There was not one single moment that I was not utterly terrified. It’s an incredibly complicated character — maybe the most complicated female character I’ve ever had the challenge of grappling with,” Winslet said. Being from the area, Allen always wanted to create a dramatic plot surrounding Coney, but wasn’t able to until new technologies cut the price of filmmaking. The film can be seen at the New York Film Festival later this month and in theaters on Dec. 1(via Gothamist)
