~THE BID IS IN FOR ISLANDERS’ BELMONT ARENA: Start spreading the news. They’re leaving … sometime soon. The New York Islanders’ tenure in our fair borough saw the beginning of its end Thursday morning when theDowntown Brooklyn-based NHL franchise officially entered its Bid for Proposal for a new arena site in Belmont, N.Y. Dubbed a “comprehensive proposal to create a world-class sports and entertainment destination at Belmont Park,” in a team-issued statement Thursday, the Belmont bid has been in the works for months as the Islanders are expected to opt out of their 25-year lease agreement at Barclays Center this coming January. The group that submitted the bid is called New York Arena Partners, LLC, and features a collaborative effort from Islander co-owners Jon Ledecky and Scott Malkin, Sterling Project Development, an organization spearheaded by New York Mets owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon, and Oak View Group, which is backed by Madison Square Garden. ~BROOKLYN DIOCESE ALLEGEDLY COVERS UP PRIEST SEX ABUSE: The Diocese of Brooklyn allegedly helped cover up decades of sexual abuse of the former Queens-based priest, Father Adam Prochaski. Fifteen women said they were abused by Prochaski, who was assigned to the Holy Cross parish from 1969 to 1994. Some of the women were as young as 5 when they were allegedly abused. When the Diocese of Brooklyn was notified, they allegedly took no action until he was put on “sick leave,” from 1995 to 2002. The 15 women now hope for a settlement by the Diocese, while no criminal charges were ever pressed on Prochaski. “I believe the Diocese has been in touch with him,” attorney Mitchell Garabedian said. “He may still be collecting a pension for all we know.” (via Gothamist)
~SUNSET PARK COULD BE PRIME SPOT FOR AMAZON HQ: With cities across North America competing in the Olympic-like contest to woo Amazon into building its second headquarters in their limits, Brooklyn might be among New York’s best options. Sunset Park’s Industry City area could be the most viable option, with waterfront access and a large-scale site already filled with a diversity of businesses. The owners of the site, Jamestown Properties and Belvedere Capital, have said they already applied for rezoning to allow the expansion. With developers, local politicians and real estate agents all in on plan “Brooklyn Prime,” the powers that be will do whatever they can to get the reward of the headquarters, a $5 billion investment and up to 50,000 new jobs for the borough. ~A TALK WITH ST. FRANCIS COLLEGE’S NEW PRESIDENT: In August, St. Francis College announced that Miguel Martinez-Saenz would become the 19th president of the 160-year old college. He follows interim PresidentTimothy J. Houlihan who filled the position after the death of Brendan J. Dugan last December. With a master’s degree and Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of South Florida, Martinez-Saenz began his academic career as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. He moved from Wittenberg to accept the position of Dean and Associate Provost for Student Success at St. Cloud State University.
