It was a rousing victory celebration at the Bay Ridge Manor on Tuesday night, when a proud and beaming state Sen. Marty Golden took the microphone and declared his Deputy Chief of Staff John Quaglione the winning City Council candidate in the Republican primary.

Quaglione entered the room to cheers and applause from his campaign team, supporters and civic leaders. While Democrats in New York City outnumber Republicans by six to one, District 43, which includes Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst, has a strong GOP presence.

Quaglione fought a long, hard battle against his GOP opponents Liam McCabe, a former aide to U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan; Bob Capano, a supermarket manager and adjunct professor; and GOP District Leader Lucretia Regina-Potter.

The New York Daily News reported the final tally with Quaglione garnering 49 percent (1,789 votes), McCabe with 32 percent (1,153), Capano with 15 percent (543) and Regina-Potter with 4 percent (163).

Quaglione appears to have benefitted from earning the endorsements of police, fire and sanitation unions, along with strong support from Golden, whom Quaglione has stood beside for 19 years.

“When you’re in the trenches and you’re working with people across this great district and city and you’re doing the right thing, people have a way of coming out and saying thank you,” said Golden to loud applause. “And John is our man.”

He praised Quaglione for focusing his campaign on the issues. “Our children and their education, our transportation system in New York City, our ferries, express buses and the R train,” said Golden.

He cited his and Quaglione’s work on promoting more jobs and keeping the community safe, which he referred to as “one of the safest communities, if not the safest community in the city of New York,” adding, “That’s not by accident, it’s because John Quaglione rolled up his sleeves and made it happen.”

Brooklyn Republican Party Chairman Ted Ghorra called Quaglione the man of the hour and promised to unite the party behind him to make sure he wins in November.

Quaglione will face off against Democratic City Council primary winner Justin Brannan in the November election.

Quaglione thanked his campaign manager John Orlando and his entire campaign team, the police unions that supported him and his wife Kerry and their daughters Natalie and Ashley.

A highlight of the evening was when Capano appeared at the celebration to graciously offer his support and congratulate Quaglione on running an “honorable race,” adding, “I just wanted to come here personally to say job well-done, John Quaglione.”
