THE LEDE: Happy Friday, Brooklyn! The Jehovah’s Witnesses move closer to leaving Brooklyn for good, the new iPhone is coming out soon, and a heroic doctor canoes through floods to perform surgery. Plus, thousands of more troops are heading to the Middle East, tropical storm Linda is right behind Harvey, and New York is becoming whiter, wealthier and younger, according to a new report from the city. ~JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES PUT LAST DUMBO PROPERTY FOR SALE: The Watchtower is selling its massive parking lot at 1 York St., a prime site just north of the Brooklyn Bridge, in DUMBO. The property is the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ last site in DUMBO, though the religious organization still owns several properties in Brooklyn Heights. The 52,171-square-foot site, which the Watchtower has dubbed ONEYORK, is steps from Brooklyn Bridge Park and is outside of the DUMBO Historic District. It has frontage on Front Street. According to Brownstoner, which first reported the offering, the property could fetch from $54 to $78 million, based on past sales in the area. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~HARVEY VICTIMS SAVED BY N.Y. NATIONAL GUARD: New York National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing has supplied dramatic video of air rescues of stranded victims of Hurricane Harvey. In the videos, members of the Guard can be seen hanging onto terrified, water-logged victims as they are hauled by rope up to a helicopter hovering over churning flood waters. Some of the littlest victims are bundled up in blankets — and at least one had a tail. The 106th has so far rescued 345 individuals, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office saidWednesday. In total, Cuomo has deployed a total of 119 Airmen, three HH-60 Pavehawk rescue helicopters, two HC-130 search and rescue aircraft and several boats and watercraft to the Texas rescue effort. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~NEW YORK MIGRATION DATA POOL: A new project by the city’s Department of Planning breaks down Census figures of the city from 1935 to 2014 in colorful charts and timelines. “Who Migrates To and From NYC,” mapped out by Chris Whong, looks at several categories, including age, sex, race, nativity, marital status, earnings, occupation and more. “While NYC has seen wide variations in the volume of migrants through the decades, certain groups are more inclined to come or go,” the project states. The data lines up with the city’s influx of hipsters and rich folk, showing New York as becoming a more popular destination for the white, wealthy, young, married and professional. (via Technically Brooklyn)

~SALMAN RUSHDIE COMES TO BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY: Brooklyn Public Library will host Salman Rushdie on Sept. 7 to discuss his highly anticipated and timely new novel with writer Colum McCann. “The Golden House” marks Rushdie’s triumphant and exciting return to realism as he recounts the past eight years of American politics. The book will examine the rise of the Tea Party, Gamergate and identity politics; the backlash against political correctness; and the insurgence of a ruthlessly ambitious, narcissistic, media-savvy villain sporting makeup and colored hair. The result is a modern epic set against the panorama of contemporary politics and culture, a story of love and terrorism, loss and reinvention — a powerful novel told with the daring and panache that make Rushdie a force of light in our dark new age.(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
