New Marvel miniseries to help break records for city, says Cuomo

A new superhero-centric miniseries is helping break records for the state of New York, according to Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The pol announced on Monday, July 31 that Disney, Marvel Television and Netflix are working together to expand on their commitment to the largest television production project in New York State history – more than doubling the initial commitment – with the forthcoming premiere of “Marvel’s The Defenders.”

The series – produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios – will bring beloved street-level heroes from fellow Netflix originals “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist” together in one series to fight fictitious crime on the streets of the Big Apple.

“New York is home to world-class entertainment talent and opportunities, and this historic commitment from Disney and Marvel Television studios underscores our position as the film and television capital of the world,” said Cuomo, stressing that, this year alone, 40 television series have already applied for the state’s film tax credit program, all of which are projected to spend $1.4 billion and utilize 94,185 hires statewide. “These productions will result in thousands of new hires and infuse our economy as we continue our momentum across the state.”

The commitment only adds on to the companies’ previous promise – also unprecedented – to develop multiple original series revolving around four of Marvel’s most popular characters with New York at the forefront.

All four of the other series have been picked up for additional seasons as well as a new spin-off series featuring “The Punisher.”

“The Defenders” will premiere on August 18.
