ON THIS DAY IN 1919, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Senators Pick Flaws in Treaty with France — Are Certain it Will Be Rejected.”

The article focused on Paris Peace Conference negotiations that took place at the end of World War I.

“Although President Wilson has taken the position that the treaty is not properly an alliance, Sen. Boarah, Republican, Idaho, and others maintain that it has all the forces of the Alliances which have been common among European nations. In the view of this group, the treaty will be even more in contradiction of American traditions than Article 10 of the League of Nations covenant under which the members of the League would ‘undertake to respect and preserve as against external aggression the territorial integrity’ of all members of the League,” the Eagle reported.

HENRY FORD WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1863. Best known for the assembly-line method of automobile production that revolutionized the industry, the industrialist’s Model T made up half of the world’s output of cars during its years of production. Ford built racing cars until 1903, when he and his partners formed the Ford Motor Company. In 1908, the company presented the Model T, which was produced until 1927, and in 1913 Ford introduced the assembly line and mass production. This innovation reduced the time it took to build each car from 121/2 hours to only 11/2. This enabled Ford to sell cars for $500, making automobile ownership a possibility for an unprecedented percentage of the population. He is also remembered for introducing a $5-a-day wage for automotive workers. Ford died in Missouri in 1947.

In 1967, he was awarded the National Medal of Science by the National Academy of Sciences. When asked to comment on the content of American television in an 1981 interview, Zworykin replied, “Awful.” He died in New Jersey in 1982.
