ON THIS DAY IN 1932, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Coney like Scene of Dante’s Inferno.”

The article focused on a four-block fire that left 2,000 residents homeless.

“From the beach to Surf Avenue between 21st and 26th streets, the area was roped off. Inside the area, hundreds of firemen and workmen of the gas, electric and water companies were busily engaged in washing down the scores of still-burning ruins, untangling the masses of wire and repairing breaks in water and gas mains,” the Eagle reported.

THE BIRMINGHAM RIOTS OCCURRED ON THIS DAY IN 1791. A dinner celebrating the second anniversary of the fall of the Bastille sparked fiery riots of angry anti-French Revolution mobs in Birmingham, England. The main target of their wrath was scientist (discoverer of oxygen) Joseph Priestley, who approved of the American and French revolutionary causes and who held unpopular religious views. The mob ruled Birmingham for three days, burning Priestley’s home and laboratory as well as the homes of his friends. Priestley, in disguise, and his family narrowly escaped with their lives.

WOODY GUTHRIE WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1912. The American folksinger and songwriter of more than 3,000 songs traveled the country and quickly became a figure of hope to others suffering in the Great Depression. Guthrie wrote one of America’s unofficial national anthems, “This Land Is Your Land,” in 1940 and recorded it in 1944. During the 1940s and early 1950s, he lived on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island. He was diagnosed in 1954 with Huntington’s Chorea and was hospitalized for the rest of his life. Guthrie died in Queens in 1967.
