THE LEDE: Good morning Brooklyn! Have you waited in the long, long line at Trader Joe’s on Court Street in order to nab those low prices? If so, what would it take to make you shop elsewhere? You may have noticed that gas stations are slowly disappearing from the borough, and BP Eric Adams has a plan to address the issue. Meanwhile, a film school in Williamsburg remains decidedly old school, and a pack of decked-out doggies will soon descend onPark Slope. Today’s Staff Picks include an interview with the director of this year’s Shakespeare in the Park performance, and an argument for why Brooklyn will never best Texas in the BBQ game.

IMPRINT: He may be modeling on the cover of AARP, but Steve Martin still looks sharp.

~HOW MUCH ARE YOU WILLING TO PAY TO AVOID THE LINE AT TRADER JOE’S ON COURT STREET?: The prices at this and other national mega-chains may beat your local neighborhood supermarket, and most Mom-and-Pop stores don’t even try to compete in that arena. Instead, they aim for the “slow dollar” by trying to give consumers a more pleasant (and less hectic) shopping experience. Here’s a look at how the independently owned Montague Street Key Food stays afloat amid Gristedes and Trader Joe’s. (via the WSJ)

~WHERE ARE ALL THE GAS STATIONS?: Nine gas stations in Brooklyn have dried up since 2012, and a new report from BP Eric Adams indicates that another 12 could follow within the coming three years. That’s why he’spushing for backup power sources and sustainable fueling optionsthroughout the borough. He says he’ll back funding for new electric vehicle stations in Brooklyn, and also call on city and state agencies to help gas stations implement backup plans in case of hurricanes and power outages. (via the NYDN)

~WELCOME TO BROOKLYN, CHELSEA PIERS: The company behind the 28-acre Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex on the westside of Manhattan will be opening a 52,000 square foot complex in our boroughon the border of Downtown Brooklyn and Boerum Hill. Jake Elghanayan, the senior vice president of developer TF Cornerstone says the deal reflects the area’s shift toward becoming a 24/7 hub of activity. (via the WSJ)

~LET THERE BE LIGHT (BUT NOT A ZILLION LIGHT FIXTURES) AT LUNDY’S: That’s the verdict by the Landmarks Preservation Commission(LPC) on the Lundy Brothers Restaurant building, which is Sheepshead Bay’s only city landmark. The LPC instructed Lundy’s Management Corp. to remove most of the sconce light fixtures that are already on the building instead of adding new ones, and to position proposed light poles in a parking lot so they’re set back from the building’s rear facade. In its heyday, the iconic shoreline seafood restaurant served 1 million meals per year, and it was designated as a city landmark in 1992. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~A RETURN TO OLD SCHOOL IN WILLIAMSBURG: The digital revolution didn’t necessarily skip over Mono No Aware in Williamsburg. Rather, the film school has simply turned its back on it in favor of shooting footage on film stock and making a purposeful return to analog filmmaking. After all, says founder Steve Cossman“it makes more sense to shoot on something archival that will last 100 years rather than to a hard drive that will crash in four years.” The school hosts workshops and monthly screenings, as well as lectures like “Introduction to 16-Millimeter Filmmaking.” The roughly 400 students who filter through the school annually hail from a range of backgrounds–from PhD students to retirees to 13-year-olds. (via the NYT)

~DOG DAYS OF SUMMER IN PARK SLOPE: This Saturday, July 15catch the paw-some action at Freddy’s Bar 4th Annual Doggy Fashion Show, with a red-carpet entrance (6 p.m.) for canine stars, step-and-repeat banner photo shoot for pupperazzi and free doggy swag. The fashion show celebrates the first of this summer’s Park Slope Fifth Avenue’s four Summer Strolls, when the street transforms into a giant block party, where you can wolf down some kibble, lap up delicious drinks, dance like a dingo, howl along with live music and go bow-wow over fabulous fashion. Other activities include ping pong, a vintage car show, giant street chess, a rock climbing wall, mini golf and — I shih-tzu not — a pup-up park-in-the-street with a 79-foot turf lawn. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
