ON THIS DAY IN 1954, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Grand Jury to Hear Six Cops on Row.”

The article focused on the hearing of six cops who were involved in an incident in which an off-duty officer pistol-whipped and beat a Bay Ridge businessman.

“A parade of 15 witnesses was called in the case yesterday but only four of these were heard by the jury in its first day of investigation. None of the principal combatants in the June 30 brawl has yet testified,” the Eagle reported.

MARCEL PROUST WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1871. The famed author gained an international reputation for his 13-volume masterpiece “A la Recherche du Temps Perdu” (“Remembrance of Things Past”). Proust died in Paris in 1922.

FREDERICK HUBBARD GWYNNE WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1926. Born in New York, the actor is best known for his TV roles as Herman Munster in “The Munsters” and Officer Muldoon in “Car 54, Where Are You?” Gwynne died in 1993 in Maryland.

DAVID BRINKLEY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1920. He was one of the most recognizable faces in American broadcast journalism for more than 50 years. Brinkley was NBC’s first White House correspondent, and his outstanding coverage of the 1956 Democratic and Republican national conventions landed him the anchor job on NBC’s nightly TV newscast, paired with Chet Huntley until 1970. In 1981, Brinkley moved to ABC, creating a Sunday-morning interview show called “This Week with David Brinkley.” He died in Texas in 2003.
