Fighting a fire means climbing high in DUMBO

Photos by Mary Frost
As fun-seekers poured into DUMBO hoping to get a good seat for the Macy’s fireworks display at roughly 6 p.m. on Tuesday, firefighters from Brooklyn’s Ladder Company 118 scaled a six-story loft building at 57 Jay St. to extinguish a fire reported on a lower floor.
A crowd gathered on the sidewalk below to watch the firefighters, with air cylinders strapped to their backs, climb to a dizzying height, and then swing off the ladder onto the roof at the top.
Afterwards, members of the company lined up to feed the hoses back onto the truck.
