ON THIS DAY IN 1944, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Wed Twice to One, Woman Is Jailed as a Bigamist.”

The article focused on a Queens woman who was found guilty of bigamy.

“Alice Marie Prince, who on May 13, married Lt. John F. Prince of the New York Fire Department, is said by Assistant District Attorney Albert E. Short to be the wife of Chief Petty Officer Charles P. Campbell, to whom she has been married twice,” the Eagle reported.

ESTÉE LAUDER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1908. In high school, the cosmetics magnate took an interest in the work of her uncle, John Schotz, a Hungarian-born chemist who made beauty products for women. She began a business at her kitchen table in 1946 that has gone on to become one of the world’s largest, most successful cosmetics companies. The introduction of her breakthrough formula for the bath oil Youth Dew in the 1950s led the way to a company currently worth more than $10 billion. At the time of her death in 2004 in New York, Lauder was among the 500 richest women in the world.

PRINCESS DIANA WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1961. The former wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, and mother of Prince William and Prince Harry died in a car accident in France in 1997.
