THE LEDE: Good morning on yet another gray day, Brooklyn! This morning, we bring you the latest in the saga of the century-old Our Lady of Loretochurch, and a Brooklyn attorney scrambles to prepare for roughly 20,000 Haitians in Brooklyn and Queens that could face deportation if they lose temporary protection status. Plus, the NY State Senate shot down a bill promoting transgender rights (again), and the Nets don hairnets. And just for some Thursday fun, check out a photo of the late Henry Miller’s Brooklyn residence, and find your 2,000-year-old doppelgänger. We’ll see you again on Friday!

IMPRINT: No doubt the late, iconic radio host Barry Gray would approve ofthis cover of the NYT Mag.

The Rundown

~HANDS OFF THAT HISTORIC BUILDING!: A judge has called a temporary halt to the planned demolition of a century-old Ocean Hill-Brownsville church, Our Lady of Loreto. Catholic officials have been threatening to tear the church down, but a former parishioner has filed a suit and won a stay…until May 9, at least. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~20,000 HAITIANS COULD BE DEPORTED FROM NYC: Brooklyn immigration attorney and former president of the Haitian American Lawyers Association of NY, Emmanuel Depas has been busy since January 20…and he could find himself even busier since U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services recommended that temporary protection be dropped for the roughly 50,000 Haitians that came to the U.S. after the 2010 earthquake. That means nearly 20,000 Haitians living in Brooklyn and Queens could face deportation. Depas says, “You look back at it — first it was Muslims, then Mexicans, now it’s Haitians…Who is next?” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~TRANSGENDER RIGHTS BILL SHOT DOWN…AGAIN: After clearing the NY State Assembly ten (yes, ten) times, the Senate shot down a billsponsored by Sen. Daniel Squadron that would give transgender people equal protections under the law. Sen. Andrew Lanza of Staten Island delivered a “nay” vote, while Sen. Brad Hoylman of Manhattan gave an emphatic “yay.” After the bill tanked, Hoylman said in a statement, “It’s morally reprehensible that the state Senate considers transgender New Yorkers to be second class citizens.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~PAGING JIMMY MCMILLAN: In a preliminary vote, the Rent Guidelines Board recommends raising rents in rent-stabilized apartments by as much as 4 percent. That’s in stark contrast to the past two years of rent freezes. This year, the board says increases in operating and fuel costs justify the hikes. The final decision will come down June 27. ~SEE YOU IN COURT, MTA: Only 24 percent of NYC subway stations pass muster with a group of disability organizers and disabled residents, thanks to a lack of elevators and electric lifts. That’s the lowest accessibility rate out of all the country’s 10 largest transit systems, they say. The group slapped the MTA with two lawsuits, claiming violation of NYC’s human rights law. ~FROM THE COURT TO THE FOOD PANTRY: Having missed out on the playoffs for a second straight year, the Brooklyn Nets have some time on their hands. Last week, center Justin Hamilton and the Nets’ cheerleading team the Brooklynettes volunteered and served lunch at St. John’s Bread and Life, a food pantry in Bed-Stuy.
