ON THIS DAY IN 1946, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Anti-Churchill Rally at Columbia Set by Student Groups.”

The article focused on Communist student groups that planned a demonstration to protest the honorary degree that then-English Prime Minister Winston Churchill was scheduled to receive from the school.

“Charging that Mr. Churchill’s plea at Fulton, Missouri for an Anglo-American military alliance was aimed against the Soviet Union, representatives of several student clubs, described on the Barnard campus as Communist groups, asked permission of the student political council to hold a rally Monday at 12:30 p.m.,” the Eagle reported.
